From our Year 3/4's

‘Don’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream the further you get.’ Michael Phelps

So far this term the Year 3/4 Students have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to embrace the 2021 Olympics throughout multiple areas of their learning.

In reading, students this week looked at various stories of adversity and perseverance through the Olympics. Students read the stories of Jesse Owens breaking barriers, Derek Redmond pushing through great injury to finish his running race and Yusra Mardini a representative of the Refugee Olympic Team among others. Students participated in discussions about these stories as well as completing Comprehension Activities.

Next week students will do the same, but this time covering topics such as the Origin of the Games in ancient Greece, the Olympic Flame Relay and more.

Through our Integrated unit titled What it means to be your best students are focusing on the two ranging topics of Health and Civics and Citizenship. Students have been delving deeply into the Olympic and Paralympic Values, working through phrases such as Friendship, Excellence and Courage, not only discussing how they look in the context of the Olympic Games, but also how they feature in our everyday lives.

Students will look at the choices we can make in our lives that keep us most healthy, including those about hygiene and the amount of sleep we get each night. Students will also work through the concepts of Rules and Laws, the differences between them and why they are in place to keep us all happy and safe.

Finally it has been a real treat for the students to be able to watch some events live, and celebrate as Australia has been able to win gold! This has evolved to some Olympics style play on the playground (including the invention of the soon to be famous Short Jump haha), as well as games in class. Students have been thoroughly enjoying themselves, but importantly also being able to have rich learning experiences as well.

We look forward to continued work with all our Year 3 and 4 Students who are all Gold Medalists to us!
