WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

We say goodbye, and we say hello...

We have had a number of staffing changes.   Last term we wished farewell to a few of our wonderful staff.  We would like to thank them all for their support of our students and the vast contributions that they have made to the College during their time with us.  We wish you all well into the future.

We also welcome some new staff into the SCSC community and look forward to getting to know you all better.

  • Rachael Nimmo - Jacqueline Damen will be joining us to take Ms Nimmo’s classes.
  • Megan Wyatt - Ms Wyatt is taking one term of leave and will be replaced by Georgina Sheens for Term 3. Welcome to Georgina.
  • Kristy-Lee Hotchin - Ms Hotchin was successful in gaining an Acting Leading Teacher position at Belmont High School for the remainder of this year.  We wish Ms Hotchin all the best and congratulate her on this achievement.
  • Lolita Fierro - Ms Fierro’s is another one of our much loved teachers saying goodbye, as she has position with Sacred Heart.  Lolita has been replaced by Andrea Gimenez.  Welcome Andrea.
  • Natalie Schwuch - Ms Schwuch’s replacement is Kyle Bienfelt.  Welcome Kyle to SCSC.
  • Maddi Panozzo's - it is also Ms Panozzo's last week with us.  Maddi has been with us
  • Assistant Principal Kathryn O’Neill has also been successful in gaining a position at another College and we wish her the best in her future endeavours.  Ms O’Neill has made a significant contribution to SCSC in her 8 years at the College. We wish her the best, but she will be sorely missed. A process is being undertaken to replace Ms O’Neill, so she will still be with us for the beginning of next term before a new Acting Assistant Principal is in place.

There have also been some other staffing changes that are important to note so that parents know the right person to contact.

  • Mr Ricky Sullivan will be replacing Ms Annaleise Reid as Middle Sub School Leader. Ms Reid is remaining at the College in the Year 9 team and taking on some extra teaching responsibilities.
  • Mr Justin Keenan will be moving into the Year 10 Learning Community Leader role.

Introducing...

We would love to warmly welcome our new teachers to our Surf Coast Secondary College family!  Here's a little about a newbies:

Georgina Sheens

Before this term, Georgina was teaching English and this term will be teaching Outdoor Education. Before she became a Teacher, Georgina was a ski instructor in Japan and a freelance outdoor educator in South Australia (and said "please don’t hold that against me"). In regards to working at SCSC, "I am most looking forward to working in the collaborative Year 9 FUSE team and getting to know the Year 9 cohort this term!"

Paul Schmeider

Paul Schmeider teaches Year 8 Fuse, focusing on mathematics and science, and year 11 General Maths.  Paul also contributes to Year 10 Biology.

"My role last year was a maths and science teacher at North Geelong Secondary College.  This was my first teaching postion after completing my Masters of Education at Monash University.  Prior to my Masters, I worked as environmental consultant providing geochemical and water quality advise to the mining sector.
I look forward most to the collaborative teaching environment at SCSC and focusing on student needs especially in my student mentor group."

Jacqueline Damen

Jacqueline Damen is teaching Year 7 FUSE (7G mentor) and Year 10 Law and Order.

"I have worked at 3 other schools around Melbourne and also as a public servant for the Federal Government.

At SCSC I am most looking forward to being a part of the school community, and am loving that I can see the ocean from my yard duty. "

Kyle Beinefelt

Kyle Beinefelt teachers Year 8 FUSE, Humanities and English, Year 11 English

Before teaching here at SCSC, Kyle did Casual Relief Teaching and Before/After School Care and Holiday Programs through YMCA.

"I'm most looking forward to getting to know the SCSC students and making a positive impact on their attitude towards learning. Hopefully leading to greater opportunities to coach sports with a passion for cricket, AFL football and mentoring young adults."

Andrea Gimenez

"Hello, my name is Andrea and I am presently teaching Psychology and am part of the wonderful Year 9 FUSE team, teaching Maths, English and Science.  I have always been a secondary school teacher, however I also enjoy my art, and I design art work for industry every so often.  I am really looking forward to meeting all my students and SCSCS colleagues, and working with them to provide the best opportunities for all members of the SCSC family. "

Year 9 - Environmental Studies

Year 9 Environmental Studies students have been working on some climate action projects facilitated by our local member Libby Coker. Students have been promoting sustainable behaviours through posters and assemblies with the aim of reducing the schools impact on the environment.  Some samples of the student work can be seen here:

Year 9 Environmental Studies also teamed up with GORCAPA to plant trees along Spring Creek

Year 11 & 12 - Pathways Stories

On Tuesday the 22nd of June our Year 11 and 12 senior school students were lucky enough to hear the ‘pathways stories’ from some of our past students. These students had a range of senior school certificates that has lead them into pathways they are each thriving in now. They shared their successes, challenges and how their educational journey lead them to where they are today. Our students really enjoyed hearing from the people that literally sat in their shoes.  Thank you to all involved.

#CupRescue Schools Program

It is estimated that over one billion take-away coffee cups end up in landfill each year in Australia, with some estimating that the total of all take-away cups going to landfill is close to three billion annually. Take-away paper cups are lined with plastic to prevent liquid seeping through, which unfortunately prevents the cups being recycled through normal paper recycling facilities.

Surf Coast Secondary College will be working with 7-Eleven and will be receiving some cup recycling units for our staff to deposit their coffee cup, lid or straw in the recycling units.

As a College we have a strong focus on sustainability and the environment and try to make a positive impact where possible.
