Learning Across the

Junior School

From the Head of Junior School and Early Learning

It has been a terrific first term in the Junior School; our girls have enjoyed making new friendships and participating in a range of activities this term including sporting carnivals, co-curricular activities, Project Compassion fundraisers, Assembly celebrations and our fabulous Autumn Fair!  Many thanks to all who attended, to our P&F and President Tanya Smith for coordinating the day, to our families who donated items and ran stalls, and to Lisa Schulz and Tim DeJong for organising the delightful musical performances. It really was a fabulous fair, showcasing how connected we are as a community and how proud we are to be Loreto.

Our Junior School Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 11 April; we look forward to meeting with families to celebrate the achievements of our girls and to share their future learning goals. Our reporting process includes two parent teacher interviews each year, and two written reports which are posted on Loreto Connect at the completion of each school Semester.

Learning achievements are also shared at class Showcases held throughout the school year. We encourage our students to celebrate their learning, and the achievements of their peers. We also teach our students to use a growth mindset when reflecting on their progress - to know that intelligence is not fixed and that identifying mistakes and areas for improvement are important parts of the learning process. New challenges do require persistence, resilience, and effort; our girls are learning to ask questions about their learning to support future success.

  • What have I learnt about myself as a learner? How do I feel about my learning?
  • What would I change or do differently? What are the steps I need to improve?
  • What was my greatest improvement? What new things have I learnt?
  • What is my goal for next term? What new questions do I have?
  • What is exciting about my work? What went well?
  • What are the things I am most proud of in my learning?

I wish all families a lovely Easter break. Easter is the most important holiday of the Christian Church calendar, it is a time of hope, renewal, and celebration. I warmly thank Ms Isabelle Roberts, our Religious Education Coordinator and Liturgist, for preparing our Holy Week liturgies that teach our girls about the gifts of love, peace, and forgiveness. May you enjoy a beautiful Easter with your family.

Our school term concludes on Friday 14 April at 3.20pm; Term 2 commences on Tuesday 2 May at 8.30am. We also wish all families a fabulous school holiday break. When the girls return, they will need to wear their winter uniform with the College blazer as the outer garment, worn to and from school with the formal uniform.

Fun in the Sun with Year 3

Our Year 3 girls capped off a very busy term with a bit of down time this week. They enjoyed an autumn picnic, delicious sweet and savoury food, picnic rugs and glorious weather – we couldn’t have asked for more. Except a party hat or two.

Science in Year 6

This week the Year 6 students attended the Senior School Labs. After a review of laboratory safety, the girls examined the workings and purpose of the Bunsen burner.

The girls then studied the Periodic Table and identified well-known elements such as oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. The girls were shown how the format of chemical compounds are arranged and labelled for water – H2O and carbon dioxide - CO2. This led to a study of the natural gas used in the lab and its chemical compound CH4 [methane].

To demonstrate the workings of the equipment, a piece of granite was held over heat and plunged it into cold water. This created sediments, thus illustrating weathering and erosion.

Year 5 Camp

This week, Year 5 went to Blanchetown to enjoy our Year 5 camp. We set off just before the start of the school day on Monday morning and made the 2-hour trip to Roonka Water Activity Park. Once we arrived, the girls were in for a great time!

Our first night was incredibly fun. We worked together to stay afloat on our homemade rafts, we glided across a beautiful billabong on a flying fox and we found yabbies and shrimp during our water ecology session.

Tuesday was full of equally fun adventures! We each got in canoes and paddled around the billabong before challenging ourselves in the Murray River. We played Simon Says, raced across the width of the river and rafted up alongside each other. The highlight was definitely the fun waterslide at the end, which was a welcome cool relief after a hard day's work on the paddles. Shortly afterwards, we visited the Morgan Museum which has a beautiful museum and a rich history.

We also pitched our own tents to sleep in on the second night. This was one of our most favourite events, as most of us had not ever done this before. Before bedtime, the camp instructors led us through a number of games which were loads of fun.

To finish off our fun filled camp we visited the recently very flooded Murray Bridge. It was very beautiful and green and we loved the chance to play on the play equipment before lunch.

All in all, the camp was a huge success! A big thank you to Wilderness Escape, our enthusiastic students and the lovely parents who supported the girls by preparing them for their big adventure.

Throughout the week Year 4 Blue have been learning about the Easter Story. This week is Holy Week, it is the time in which we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

To get into the spirit of this joyous time, the Year 4 students have been working on their fine line and patterning skills in art. Enjoy our festive Bunnies with Sunnies and 4 Blue wish you all a Happy Easter.
