Business Innovation & Design Thinking

The Year 11 Business Innovation class is focussing on design thinking principles this semester. As part of this process students have identified a problem/customer/solution hypothesis. In order to test the hypothesis and establish the validity of the solution students have participated in a number of activities that focus on critical and creative thinking.

A student reflection on one of the tasks below:

"We were given the task to build and design a tower out of limited resources, including 20 pieces of spaghetti, one marshmallow, 1 meter of string and 1 meter of sticky tape. The challenge was to build the highest possible tower with a marshmallow on top.  We had the opportunity to discuss, build and refine our design. The task proved to be difficult, taught us about prototyping and required much team work and collaboration.”

Native Night

This week, the Year 12 Food and Hospitality class hosted a ‘Native Night’ dinner party inspired by the Loreto Indigenous Garden. Students were given the design brief to cater a three-course healthy meal, inspired by local Indigenous flavours. To the Indigenous people of Australia, native fruits, plants and seeds have served as a source of food and medicine for over 50,000 years. Through this dinner, students aimed to promote Indigenous culture by raising awareness and appreciation of the sophistication that native ingredients can bring to a meal. Students collaborated with Clare winery, Paulette’s, to explore native flavour combinations. From this, the students planned the menu, aesthetic and organised all of the ordering and invites. This student led initiative celebrates the wonders of native ingredients. A special thanks to our guests and contributors – Paulette’s Winery and Junior School Parent, Samantha Zimmerman. Congratulations girls, the feedback from guests was an overwhelming 10/10!

Mock Trials

Round Two of Mock Trails was held on Tuesday the 4th of April, at Adelaide District Courts competing against Cedar College. Our eager Mock Trial girls from year 10 and 12 were acting as the defence on Police vs Hart assault case. The trial was a lengthy one, with both teams well prepared and showing compelling arguments from each of the prosecuting and defence sides. The accused was found guilty of assault, resulting in a case win for Cedar College.

The judge gave in-depth feedback and explained the processes throughout the trial. It was a valuable experience for the students to be in an actual court room, seeing first-hand how a court would normally run and appear. Our girls went in strong, having ample preparation in the lead up to the trial as they presented with confidence.

We are still eagerly waiting in anticipating for the Judges final decision of what team won the Mock Trial Round - we will keep you updated!

Our students did a fantastic job in the preparation and lead up as well as supporting each other throughout the night, with the most objections called and sustained in our Mock Trial history. Now we recess until Round Three, to be held next term. Well done girls, we are very proud of you.
