Out and About

MONASH UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONS!!!

On Thursday 16 March, a group of enthusiastic middle school students were selected for the 2017 Access Monash Champions Program.  We travelled to Sandown Race Course where we met our mentors Hamish and Jade, took part in leadership activities and were introduced to our project that we would be working on for the next five months.

Our project was based on tertiary education, where we explained to our peers the importance of tertiary education and how important it is for their future careers.  Within this project we conducted hours of research, interviewed Monash University students and sent out a survey which was later added to the website that we created.  Our website consists of valuable information about university and what it is like to be a student at university.

On Thursday 31 August, we presented this project at the Peninsula Monash University Campus in front of other schools participating in the Monash Champions Program.  Throughout the day we watched the presentations from other schools and had an inspirational guest speaker talk to us about how traumatic experiences can shape our character. Overall, we have gained lots of knowledge about tertiary education and the university experience and are very grateful to have been given the chance to take part in the Monash Champions Program.

We would like to thank Mrs Aimee Pelzer for all her support.

World Vision 40 Hour Famine

Over the weekend, 12-13 August, a group of Frankston High School students participated in the World Vision 40 hour famine and raised $440.50

This year’s 40 Hour Famine is supporting the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time the refugee and displaced persons crisis.  Globally, more than 32.5 million children have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict.  This year, students were committed to living out of their backpacks for 40 hours to raise funds for refugees and displaced children.  This experience helped our students understand what it's like for these children to leave everything behind, even if it was just for a weekend!

I would like to congratulate the following students who were in the top donors:

Orlando Randles (Year 7) - $120.70

Harriet Muhlnickel (Year 7) - $115.00

Archie Borradale (Year 7) - $42.40

Daniel Goodman (Year 8)  - $42.40

Roo Gambiza (Year 10) - $20.00

Mrs Sarah Bahramis - $100.00

State Schools Constitutional Convention

I had the pleasure of accompanying Fern Nicholls (Year 11) and Molly Ash (Year 11) to Parliament house on Tuesday 12 September to take part in the Victorian Secondary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention.

The topic for the day was “Should Australia abolish compulsory voting and should the voting age be lowered to 16?”.  Both girls took the opportunity to share their views on the topic in small groups and Fern was chosen to provide one of the opening statements.

This meant standing up in front of the 100 delegates from other schools in the Legislative Assembly, using the microphones our parliamentarians use and following Parliamentary protocol.

Both girls represented Frankston High School exceptionally well actively contributing to their group discussions.  I wish them luck in their applications for the National Convention to be held in Canberra next year.
