Year 7 Parent Book Club – supporting our children in their reading journey

Parents enjoyed a lovely evening of conversation and sharing ideas at the first ever Year 7 Parent Book Club on Tuesday March 7th at 7pm in the Trinity College Resource Centre.

Reading is vital for academic success in every subject and parents appreciated the opportunity to seek guidance and advice as to how they can support their child in their secondary school journey; whether their child is an avid or reluctant reader.

This was an opportunity for parents to experience being a student in 2023 as they returned to the English classroom to explore key themes from the Term One compulsory English text Paper Planes.

It was also an opportunity to share drinks and nibbles as parents connected with other parents, shared book recommendations and met library staff and English teachers. Many parents also took the chance to check out the wonderful facility which is our Resource Centre and borrow lots of books!

The book club will be running once a term and everyone is invited to come once or come regularly.

If you would like to know more, you can join our private Facebook group (or perhaps be put in contact with other parents who have come along) - please contact Jennie Darcy jdarcy@tcc.vic.edu.au

Anyone who would like a copy of the book for the Term Two Parent bookclub, please get in touch with the Resource Centre staff or Jennie Darcy to arrange for a copy to be made available for you. This book is a memoir, which is aligned with the unit on 'Life Stories' that the Year 7s will be working on next term.

Parent comments:

“It was great to feel like I am not the only one who has a child that won’t read!”

“What a great night Tuesday night was! A bunch of parents facing the same chapter together and feeling stronger and more understood as a tribe.”

“It was great to hear what other people were enjoying reading and it gave me ideas for what to suggest for my own child.”
