From the Principal

It has been a great week at MSC.

The Year 7 Meet and Greet was well attended. It was lovely to chat with families, however, the highlight was listening to three Year 7 students talk about their experiences. It has been such a positive start to the year.

Interschool sport for Year 9/10 students has occurred and the Vocational Major students were able to escape from the Escape Room on Racecourse Road.

Our annual Athletics Carnival was a huge success, with many students actively engaged in activities, such as the egg and spoon races, gumboot throwing and running on the athletics track at Ballam Park.

Progress checks are now available on Compass. Students will be setting learning goals based on their reports. These will be completed during CONNECT time and will form the basis of Parent/Teacher interviews, held Thursday 30th March via Microsoft Teams. Parent/Teacher interviews will occur 12-7pm, online.

Open night is scheduled for Thursday 9th March. The College will be open for families to tour. It is an opportunity to learn about what MSC has to offer and for families to ask questions of students and staff. Everyone is welcome.

Have a wonderful week.

Thank you to our Year 7 parents and guardians for attending the Year 7 Meet and Greet. By all accounts it was a great evening. Our teachers loved having the opportunity to meet you and discuss how your child is settling at secondary college. Today we have Year 8 Assembly and the team will discuss the upcoming camps as well as share some fun ideas for the year level. Year 9 students assembly next week will focus on rewarding excellent attendance, excellent effort and excellent academic progress.

School Immunisation Program

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine information for parents/guardians

From 6 February 2023, the routine two dose HPV vaccine schedule provided to young people ages 12-13 years through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) has become a single dose schedule using the same Gardasil®9 vaccine.

What is the HPV vaccine?

The Gardasil®9 vaccine protects against HPV infection, which is a common viral infection, usually affecting the genitals and spread through sexual contact. The vaccine is most effective when given before exposure to the virus, that is before a person becomes sexually active. More information about HPV and the HPV vaccine can be found on the on the Better Health Channel..

https://www.betterhealth.vic.bov.au/health/healthyliving/humas-papillomavirus-hpv-immunisation

How has the HPV vaccine schedule changed?

From 6 February 2023, the recommended HPV vaccine schedule for most people has changed from two doses to a single dose course using the same Gardasil®9 vaccine. There is no change to the amount of vaccine that is given in the single dose.

The schedule has not changed for immunocompromised people. A 3-dose schedule of HPV vaccine is recommended for people with severely immunocompromising conditions, regardless of their age when they started vaccination.

Why was this change made?

The change is based on advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), who have considered and reviewed the latest international clinical evidence. ATAGI support the large volume of clinical findings that a single dose of HPV vaccine provides about the same protection as two dosed of HPV vaccine.

What do you need to do?

Your council immunisation service will seek your consent for vaccinations delivered to students at school as usual.

If you would like to discuss the change, or clarify any information about the HPV vaccine, please contact your local council.

Year 10

Accelerated Year 10 student, Leni McLeod did a remarkable job of creating a 20th Century timeline in her notebook this week.

Students of Modern History are learning to write up analyses of key primary source images and documents.  They are also beginning to formalise their summary writing skills to better help themselves in retaining the huge amount of content necessary to perform well at senior level in History.  In Unit 1, they are studying World History from the time of the Vienna Congress  (1815) to the beginning of the Great War (1914).

Events/Highlights

Year 7 Parent Teacher Meet and Greet

Year 7 Meet and Greet was a thorough success. Despite the heat, parents and students enjoyed afternoon tea before an address by our Principal, Linda Stanton.

Parents were entertained by some of our Year 7 students regaling them with their impressions of Year 7 at Mornington Secondary College so far.

Athletics Day

Great day had by all for our whole school Athletics Day.

Everyone had a go at either the races or fun games, it was great to see students and teachers cheering each other on and barracking for their house.

Congratulations to Coolart House for winning overall on the day.

Year 10 Outdoor Educational Studies

Students had a great time participating in snorkelling and surfing. Students spent time identifying water hazards and exploring aspects of water safety protocols that assist in minimising the risks involved in participating in water activities. Students also explored people's motivations for participating in snorkelling and surfing whilst analysing their responses to their personal snorkelling and surfing experience. Students explored and identified the flora and fauna of a coastal marine biome and the environmental conditions that shape and create it.

Year 11 Outdoor Educational Studies - Bushrangers Bay Walk

Students participated in a bushwalk to Bushrangers Bay and Point Nepean Historic Park to investigate the following components of the unit one Outdoor Education study design:

  • Exploring characteristics of different types of environments, in this case a coastal environment.
  • Personal responses to outdoor environments.
  • Knowing, experiencing and responding to outdoor environments.

This excursion will also be used to prepare students for the upcoming hikes on their Wilsons Promontory camp.
