TOP PLAYERS WIN IN CHESS

By Jenny Simmons  (Secondary Maths Teacher)

The Primary and Secondary CSEN chess tournaments were held at Maranatha Christian School last week.

Students played seven games each over the span of the day, with the aggregate of the top five students from each school determining the final scores.

Waverley Christian College, Wantirna, was the winner of both the primary and secondary divisions. Our enthusiastic Primary team came equal fifth, with there being only a difference of four points between third and sixth positions. Our secondary team fought well to come in fourth out of eight schools.

Congratulations to all our students who competed, with special congratulations to our top individual players, who were awarded medals:

Primary - Louis T, Maisy T and Kirby W (all in Year 6).

Secondary - Heath L, Caleb D and Aaron K (all in Year 12)

Individual results:

Heath L won six matches out of a possible seven. Wow!

Maisy T was the equal top female player in the primary division.

SHARING IN THE EASTER STORY: KINDER

By Kirsty Meese (Kinder Director)

We in Team Kinder have been very excited to host our first (of two) Easter Celebrations on Tuesday night.

Our celebration started by opening the door to some very excited Kinder students, who were armed with sticks, flowers and greenery from their gardens ready for their task of constructing an Easter cross with the help of their family. It was heartwarming to see all our families working together and forming relationships through the sharing of resources and the construction of Easter crosses.

After we had made our crosses we joined together for our Kinder grace and to share a meal from a variety of shared plates that the families brought in. There was sushi, pinwheels, platters, pull-a-parts, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, Easter bread and Romanian macarons. It was a fantastic smorgasbord of delicacies. It was tremendous to see our Kinder community working together to support each other in the tidying of the Kinder, so that we could begin the telling of the Easter story.

We all settled on the mat for not one but two tellings of the Easter story and to sing our new Easter song, before going for a twilight walk around our new oval singing “he died upon the cross”. We just LOVE the ease of which we are connected to the new oval, and there were such happy squeals (from children) and fabulous compliments (from parents) about our new playground and wonderful oval.

We finished our night with a small gift of wheat. If the wheat is soaked in water overnight on Easter Thursday, then spread over soil in a cup, or even on a wet paper towel on Good Friday, it should be sprouting by Easter Sunday as a sign of Jesus' rising.

ON DISPLAY NOW: DISCOVERY CENTRE

By Anita Little (Discovery Centre Manager)

This Term, Year 5 students learned about some of the incredible design techniques used by different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Here are some of the amazing shelters they constructed with this knowledge now on display in the DC. We love visitors, why not come in and have a look at the whole display!

PRIMARY PYJAMA PARTY

Last Friday the school hosted a pyjama party as a fundraiser for the Senior School's mission trip to Thailand later this year. A fantastic night was had by all, and from what we hear, not just the students that attended but also a fair few parents who took advantage of a kid-free evening to get out for a "date night" (you're welcome!). We're sure there would have been some sleep-ins on Saturday morning after such a fun-filled event.

A big thank you to the team of staff and Year 12 students who made the night possible and for each family that supported the fundraiser.
