BELONGING:

FINDING OUR PLACE IN GOD'S FAMILY

BY IVAN SESKIS ( DEPUTY PRINCIPAL)

Here at Belgrave Heights Christian School we strive to create an environment where every student feels valued and supported, where everyone is able to thrive. We believe that a sense of belonging is essential for student success, and that it is part of our responsibility as educators to foster a culture of belonging.

Harmony Day was our first BOOM day (Bring On Optimistic Moments) held on Monday 27th March. It was a celebration that recognises our cultural diversity and brings us together encouraging a sense of belonging and togetherness.

Belonging is about more than just being present in a particular place; it's about feeling connected to the people around us, feeling like we are part of something bigger than ourselves. When students feel like they belong, they are more likely to engage in their learning, participate in extracurricular activities, and form positive relationships with their peers and teachers. We all desire to feel like we belong. We want to be part of a group, a team, a family. Belonging is a basic human need that we all share, and it is something that Jesus understood well.

In the Bible, Jesus talked a lot about belonging. He described His followers as a family, a group of people who belong together. In Matthew 12:50, Jesus said, "For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." Jesus was saying that belonging is not just about blood relations, but about doing the will of God.

Belonging is also about being accepted just as we are. In Romans 15:7, we read,

"Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God."

Jesus accepted all kinds of people. He didn't judge them or reject them; He loved them and showed them compassion.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to do the same. We are called to accept one another, regardless of our differences or backgrounds. We are called to love one another, just as Jesus loved us.

Belonging is not just about being part of a group; it's about being part of God's family. In 1 John 3:1, we read,

"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"

When we belong to God, we have a place in His family. We are loved, accepted, and valued.

At Belgrave Heights Christian School, we endeavour to promote a sense of belonging. We encourage all of our staff and students to get involved in the classroom, excursions and extracurricular activities, BOOM days and to lead through serving others.

As we go through our school year, let us remember that we belong to God's family. Let us love and support one another.

Let us celebrate our differences. Let us find that we belong.
