Lectures at Lunchtime

“Lectures at Lunchtime” is an exciting new event hosted by the Girton Arts Faculty, and that program aims to expand knowledge of the arts and engage in field-related discussion. Harry Brakha, an Old Girtonian and emerging filmmaker, was our first guest speaker.

Harry spoke to a range of experiences during his third year of study at Victorian College of the Arts. He is constantly taking inspiration from the people around him, scribbling down interesting things he hears in an effort to create both realism and vibrant yet grounded characters. Sharing insight into his workflow, he spoke on how he atypically develops his narrative first, and the ideology follows (also revealing that the app Highland 2 made scriptwriting using industry-standard conventions much easier for him, a valuable resource for aspiring filmmakers).

Harry’s work heightens reality in both an authentic and hilarious fashion. We were able to take a peek at his film, Grouse, Rad and Everything in Between, that has since debuted at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

This film all too accurately depicts the awkward and emotional nature of Year 6 school discos. All media students gained invaluable insight into the industry through a familiar face, and we look forward to welcoming future speakers to enrich our classroom-based learning.
