What an abundance we have had in the garden this term!! We have easily harvested over 50kg of zucchini and cucumbers. Our basil beds are looking gorgeous with all the different varieties and the students loved picking and tasting the yellow cherry tomatoes as well.

Our new garden beds are finished. Students have had the opportunity to add plants and to lay some pavers through the garden beds which they have thoroughly enjoyed.

Here are some of their thoughts:

Today we planted peas. We also weeded a garden bed. We all watched Bianca dumpster dive and then finished the weeding after seeing many bugs. We found so many insects in the garden bed. We enjoyed the garden so much. Thanks, Bianca!

Today we planted peas, stabbed stakes into the ground, pulled weeds and found a huge nest of insects. We enjoyed planting the peas, watching Bianca dumpster dive for a bin and watering plants.

Today in the garden we enjoyed patting the chickens. They were so soft, and they tried to peek us. It was also fun collecting the eggs. We liked pulling out the weeds, even though it was hard, it was satisfying to see a full bin. We found a giant potato which was surprising and 2 ginormous zucchinis. Finding and picking yellow cherry tomatoes was also fun.

Students this week have been busy emptying out a compost bin. There were some concerns that it might be smelly and full of rotting fruit. This allowed us to discuss what composting is and to reassure the students that we were just moving soil. The students responded with wonderment and awe, finding all types of bugs that lived in the compost – from rollie pollies, spider, centipedes, worms and beetle. They were all there!

As summer ends we will start the busy task of clearing out our garden beds and preparing them for autumn and winter crops.

Thanks for all your support.
