Year 10 & 11 Textiles Excursion - 27th March

Our Years 10 and 11 Textile students attended the NGV’s exhibition Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos Muse. Students. Students began the day listening to a member from the National Gallery describe Alexander McQueen's beginnings and profile within the Textile industry, along with his exploration of textile processes and his strong connection to art and various other influences. Students were then able to walk the exhibition as a class and take in the range of textile processes used by Alexander McQueen and reflect upon his use of the Design Process throughout all of his collections.

VCE VM Salvation Army visit - 28th March

On the 28th of March, the Year 11 and 12 VCE VM students went on a Youth Homelessness Tour with the Salvation Army. Students participated in activities including budgeting living on $30 a day. They walked around the streets and gardens near Parliament House and heard the stories of some of the homeless who lived in these areas.

"It opened our eyes so we don't judge people too quickly. There is always a story behind why someone is homeless." Vicki, Year 12

"I left the excursion with more knowledge about what the Salvation Army is about and the real purpose of what they are trying to do and who they are trying to help." Florence, Year 12

"When I found out that I was going to the Salvation Army, I was excited because I  would learn about developing my understanding of homelessness and challenges, like being on their own with no house, no shelter, no facilities, and no access to water and food. When I learned that 4% of children are homeless, it changed my perspective on how small the number was in comparison to adults who are homeless on the streets. I had a great time with my peers and really enjoyed the But Why activity; listening to what others came up with was really interesting and amazed me because they had some really good ideas. I've grown more appreciative of the opportunity to live in a comfortable home environment and have shelter." Jesela, Year 11

In the second half of the day, students visited the Immigration Museum and the interactive exhibition 'Identity: Yours, Mine, Ours" investigating how our self-perceptions are formed.

Year 10 Reclaimed Sculpture - 30th March

Our Year 10 Artists have designed and created sculptures using reclaimed found materials. All of the artworks communicated a message.  Some about sustainability, endangered species, coral bleaching, climate change, recycling and fleeing to safer lands.

Some of the materials used were wire, bottle tops, paper, found buttons, plastic straws, plastic bottles, reclaimed wood, cereal boxes, cardboard and used wool.  Here are some of the artworks that were created.

Harmony Day - 31st March

Congratulations to everyone at Killester who so enthusiastically participated in Harmony Day, the vibrant colours, laughter, dance and music - with the sun deciding to shine at lunchtime - made for such a wonderful celebration. Thanks to the student leadership committees, and the music staff, who made the day so special.

On Friday, March 31st, our school celebrated Harmony Day! To celebrate our school's cultural diversity, the Student Council Committee organised a chalk-art activity, where students and staff could write or draw words, phrases, or symbols that come from the various cultural backgrounds here at Killester.

Palm Sunday - 2nd April

On Palm Sunday teachers and students from Killester College joined Faith Leaders from across Victoria to walk in solidarity with refugees at the Walk for Justice and Freedom.

The Sustainability and Justice leaders, along with many friends, worked hard to create a banner that read 'Killester Welcomes All'. As part of our Harmony Day activities, the Killester community then wrote 'welcome' in various languages that reflect our school community. The staff and student participation in the event was a beautiful reflection of our community's commitment to standing up for humane treatment for people seeking asylum. This event truly embodied the Easter values of hope and compassion.

Year 11 Art - 5th April

Our Year 11 Art students have been investigating and researching the techniques and ideas behind the amazing Swedish artist, Hildah Af Klint.  They have been inspired by some of her techniques like automatic drawing and ideas of symbolic colour.  Below are some of their final A4-sized acrylic canvases.

Well done students.
