News from Monash University

Medicine Update

The Monash University School of Medicine is internationally recognised for providing a world-class education with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to medical training.

The Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) will replace the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) MBBS for applicants commencing in 2017.  The course is internationally recognised and students will graduate with a higher level qualification.

Deputy Dean of the MD program Professor Michelle Leech explains “the new program will be focused as before on preparing graduates for medical practice with a strong focus on patient safety.  The course will also focus on enhanced research and professional practice skills to equip Monash graduates to improve the health of our communities locally and globally.”  Importantly, the entry and selection requirements for both programs will also remain unchanged.  Find out more by browsing Medicine at Monash

 

Recognising Students True Potential - Access Monash Scholarships

Supporting Young Leaders

The Monash Community Leaders Scholarship rewards and supports students who want to use their Monash education to make a difference.

Recipients receive a $4000 annual payment and become part of a select group of students – Access Monash Mentors – who help us to inspire young people to pursue university study.

The Community Leaders Scholarship is available for one year (with the potential for extension) and is awarded to community-minded students with an ATAR of

RMIT Science in the City Lab Tours

Students and parents are invited to visit RMIT’s state-of-the-art learning laboratories to learn more about the programs on offer, and the research and training facilities available.  Students will also find out more about the wide range of single and double degree science programs available at the city campus including: biology, biotechnology, chemistry, environmental science, food science, nanotechnology and physics.

Medical Laboratory Visits

RMIT in collaboration with research laboratories is giving Year 10, 11 and 12 students the chance to visit medical laboratories across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. Students who are interested in the role of a Medical Scientist during the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases are encouraged to attend.  This free tour will give students a chance to find out what really happens behind the scenes. 

The half day visits will take place during the week of Monday 4 July to Friday 8 July 2016.

New Double Degree in Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Gain an end-to-end understanding of how pharmaceutical products are designed and developed, as well as the process involved in the large scale production, for a successful career.  From Semester 1, 2017, RMIT will be offering a new double degree in Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Sciences.   The four year degree will be offered across the City and Bundoora campuses, and the current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 are: a study score of at least 20 in Chemistry and in Mathematical Methods (CAS); and a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).  For more information, click here Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Engineering & Technology Cadetships (ETCAD) Program

The Engineering & Technology Cadetships (ETCAD) Program was launched in 2013 by Professional Cadetships Australia, an Australian company that has a proven record of placing Year 12 students with leading companies. 

Under the 2016 ETCAD Program, Technology Cadets will work at Westpac in Group Technology. 

Technology Cadets combine work at the Westpac Group in Sydney (city) with university study in computer science, information technology or information systems. Alternatively, cadets may undertake a commerce or arts degree and select information systems as one of their majors.

 

Technology Cadets study for six months of the year and work at Westpac Group Technology in the other half of the year. The bank allows for flexibility within the study and work program, particularly after the first year.

 

Applications for the ETCAD Program are made online to Professional Cadetships Australia.  Applications are open and will close on Friday 17 June 2016.  To be considered for a Cadetship under the ETCAD Program, students will need to expect an ATAR of at least 86.25.

Career Me app

The CareerMe app allows students to get up to date information on hundreds of jobs and careers, view job descriptions, training requirements, training locations and available jobs. You can also find the industries where skills are most in demand.

Students can go to the iTunes store or Google Playstore to download the app to their smartphone or tablet for free – just search “careerme”.

Universities in Western Australia

There are five universities in Western Australia, one of which – the University of Western Australia – is a member of the Group of Eight universities.

 

  1. Curtin University

  1. Murdoch University

  1. University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA)

  • WAI has also recently introduced a 6-month Certificate III in Aviation (Flight Operations) designed to enhance students’ opportunities to fulfil their plans to work with an airline as a cabin crew member.  The focus of this course is about customer service, and not really about emergency procedures. Topics of study - beverage service, flight retailing, meeting customers, etc. managing disruptive customers, etc.
  • WAI offers a range of courses in events, from certificate to bachelor level - Events Management
  • Another specialised area WAI offers training in is Resort Management and students get  to gain specialised industry training and qualifications tailored to particular areas of the industry, including alpine, dive, water recreation and spa and wellness - Resort Management
