Wellbeing in Year 3/4

Since the beginning of the school year, the Grade 3 / 4’s have been having in depth conversations about establishing classroom rules and expectations.  Based on our Inquiry Unit in Civics and Citizenship about “Who Makes the Rules?”, the children have been learning about what a rule and expectation is and how they are made within our communities and Country.  The students brought that same concept about what it means to be a ‘good citizen’ into each homeroom. The rules that were established within each group included ‘Ensure that our environment is kept clean and tidy’ and ‘Listen to others as I would want them to listen to me’.

Furthermore, each homeroom meets together once a week for half an hour to talk about any local, national or world issues.  In these homeroom meetings, students have the opportunity to discuss their thoughts, feelings, opinions and experiences as part of their own learning and development.  The aim of each homeroom meeting is to provide students with:

  1. Opportunities for shared conversations among the whole group
  2. A model of importance of collective community sharing and coming together
  3. Encouragement of interactions within a group broader than the smaller sub-group, clinic groups or friendship groups students already share
  4. Practice in expressing opinions or views about a range of issues, including global issues.
