Foundation News

Online Learning

We are very proud of how quickly and enthusiastically students in Foundation have adjusted and adapted to learning remotely online. We are now in the groove of Zoom meetings, and it is extremely pleasing to date, we have had almost 100% attendance each and every day.

It is obvious students are devoting  time and effort into completing assigned tasks and we are super impressed with the creativity and quality of work so far. Special mention goes to parents who are not only guiding and supporting students with their learning, but are uploading assigned tasks too. Grazie!

You will now note on each daily schedule posted in Google Classroom, work that  is expected to be uploaded has been specified.  Once work is uploaded, teachers review each student's submission and then post feedback, so that parents and students are aware of future goals. These relate to skills pertaining to a particular learning intention within each curriculum area.  Students are welcome to upload other tasks that have been set each day, which teachers will view without posting comment.

Term 2 "What Do Living Creatures Need To Survive?"

We have started this term discussing the needs of humans. Students were asked to reflect on what they need to live. After our Zoom chat, students came up with a substantial list. It was good to hear them not only identify basic needs but  explain how these needs are met. Here is a sample of what some students in FL and FJ  had to say:

Mathematics

Students have enjoyed the hands-on experience of finding objects with different lengths around the house. They have measured different items directly and indirectly, to determine which are longer, shorter, or the same length by ordering them and making sure  they measure fairly by starting from the same point. It was great to see students develop their use of measurement language and estimation skills.

Reading

Books written by Mem Fox
Books written by Mem Fox

This term our focus author is Mem Fox. At the beginning of each week, students in Foundation will listen to one of her books being narrated. Reading tasks for the week will be based on the book of the week. We encourage students to listen and read along with the book each day so they become familiar with the characters, story-line, themes and vocabulary within Mem Fox's books.

We remind students that the 2020 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open! What a great time to start reading!
