VCE Parent Information Evening & Pathways Expo

On Monday June 18 and Tuesday June 19, a more formal approach to the transition to VCE begins for students in Year 10.  At the VCE Information Evening, a range of speakers will present information on VCE Programs and subjects, promotion policies and alternative pathways.  The subject selection process will be explained.  Please ensure that you attend this important event with your Year 10 student.

The Pathways Expo will take place in the gym for students to peruse the broad range of VCE studies that will be offered in 2019.  Information stalls will be set up by each Domain with displays, hand-outs, examples of work and folios for students to view.  Teachers and students will be on hand to answer questions and assist the Yr 10s in making more informed decisions regarding their own subject choices.  Last year, the students benefited greatly from visiting studies they were interested in, asking their questions and receiving helpful advice and information from teachers, past and present students.  It was a hugely successful event and we are anticipating a similar outcome this year so please avail yourselves of the opportunity to arrive half an hour prior to the start of the VCE Information Evening to peruse the stands yourselves.

On the night, interested students will be able to collect an Application for Accelerated Studies Units 1 – 4 and/or VCE Options Program Application.  The forms are due to the Level Leaders Office by 4:00pm Tuesday July 17, 2018. This begins the process of subject selection for our senior students.  More will be explained at the Information Evening Monday, June 18.

Year 12 News

The GAT – all students undertaking Units 3/4 Studies are required to complete the General Achievement Test (GAT), Wednesday June 13, 10 a.m. to 1.15 p.m.  The GAT plays an important role in checking that school-based and external assessments have been accurately assessed.

The GAT is a singles session 3-hour test comprising two writing tasks and 70 multiple choice questions. You are here:  It is a test of general knowledge and skills in:

  • written communication
  • mathematics, science and technology
  • humanities, the arts and social sciences

Each represents a body of general knowledge and skills that students are likely to have built up through their school years.

Because it is a general test, no special study is required for the GAT. Students will already have done preparation for the GAT in past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History, where they have built up general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning. These are the knowledge and skills that will be tested.

Students can get a good idea of the questions by looking at previous GAT papers

Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these questions and note that all the information needed to work out the right answer is provided.

GAT assemblies have been organised for Monday May 21 to distribute information about this important event.

The GAT will be followed by a Year 12 BBQ lunch and some special activities. Unit 3 classes will be cancelled for the day.

More information about the GAT can be found at:    http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/gat/index.aspx
