Intermediate Learning Community

ILC Report

It is a busy term for our Intermediate students.  Today a small group have gone to Collingwood to participate in a program called Heroes Day.  In a couple of weeks we have our Year 10 students taking their driving skills on by participating in a METEC day which allows them to drive and, if they chose, get their learners permit.  On the same day the Year 9 students will be completing a St.Johns First Aid course ready for our Year 9/10 Survivor camp at Riddles Creek the week after.

Reach Heroes Day

Last Friday 12 students from Year 9 and 10 joined hundreds of other young people in the workshop “Heroes Day”, run by the Reach Foundation. The focus of the day was for students to think about how they want to be remembered and how they can become the best version of themselves. Students had the opportunity to meet some guest speakers, including Some Bonde DJ who was a highlight for several young people, and to learn about how to engage in their own Heroes Journey. It was great to see some of our young people stand up and contribute their own thoughts or feelings during the day.

Despite being an emotional experience, the day was thoroughly successful and I look forward to seeing how our students bring these lessons back to their everyday lives and become heroes in their own journeys.

Congratulations to Mikayla, Indiah, Coreena,  Emily, Kieren, Adam, Brooke, Tiffany, Paul, Samara, Brenden and Tom for going outside your comfort zone!!

Intermediate English

The intermediate English students this term will be looking at how language is used to persuade.  We use persuasive language just about every day and we certainly are exposed to seeing it and hearing it through newspaper articles and products advertised on radio and seen on television.

The first couple of weeks this term we have scrutinised different sections of newspapers.  Students are now working on writing their own newspaper reports incorporating the ‘who, what, where, when and how’.  This will lead onto analysing language in opinion pieces. Finally, students will deliver a persuasive oral to the class on current issues in the media.

We encourage all students to help consolidate their learning by reading newspapers at home and watching news stories to keep up to date with issues happening now.

Keep watching for examples of our own news reports in following newsletters.
