Kids Teaching Kids

On Thursday 8 September, St Albans Secondary College was the host school for Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) Week. KTK Week proudly sponsored by Department of Environment and Quantas is a free, national, inquiry based, peer teaching program that uses the environment as a theme for learning. Our Year 9 ADVANCE students were excellent peer leaders as part of their Community Service for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DUKES). The event was financially supported by Brimbank City Council and organised by Karina King, their Environmental Education Officer. The schools in attendance included: Derrimut Primary School (PS), Mother of God PS, St Therese PS, Sunshine North PS, Copperfield College and Overnewton College. It was great that inspirational speaker, Mr Aaron Woods, Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year and founder of the KTK organisation attended the event.

It was exciting for the students to be part of an event where ‘kids teach kids’ about the environment. They led workshops on sustainability topics that are important to them and their local community. The presenters were awesome and the participants learnt a lot whilst having fun.

A sincere thank you to Science Coordinator, Ms Lynne Borle for organising the Year 8 Scienceworks excursion. It was a win-win outcome, our Year 8’s had a great time and St Albans SC got to be KTK host school.

Kids Teaching Kids is a truly, inspiring program and our Year 9 Advance students were outstanding and did St Albans SC proud.
