Junior Debating Program

The Junior Debating Program has been a great success. This program is designed to introduce year 7 and year 8 students to debating, providing training for them and an opportunity for them to participate in debates against other schools. The first session on the 27th of August was a training session were adjudicators from the Debaters Association of Victoria talked to students about what to expect when participating in a debate. Students also took part in some fun activities aimed at developing debating skills.

The second session was the first opportunity for our students to debate. We had a very successful evening with two of our three teams winning. The topic was, ‘That we should ban extreme sports.’ Fatima Malik, Emma Andrianopoulos and Zeliha Kaya argued in the negative against Overnewton and they won the debate by three points. Emma Andrianopoulos and Zeliha Kaya were awarded equal best speakers. Holly Smart, Mathilda Van Keulen and Matthew Wos argued in the negative against Springside and they won by one point. Matthew Wos was awarded best speaker. Nhung Phan, Shauna Jones and Kya Williams argued in the affirmative against Overnewton and they lost the debate by 3 points.

At the conclusion of the debates, students observed an exhibition debate performed by the adjudicators. This was a great opportunity for our students to learn from some very experienced debaters. It was very useful in demonstrating the importance of not relying too heavily on cue cards and pre-prepared notes and they also observed different approaches to rebuttal. Thanks to Ms Avril Good for coaching and supporting students.

On Thursday the 8th of October the year 7 and 8 debaters participated in the second round of the Debaters Association of Victoria’s Junior Program. The topic for the second round was, ‘That all secondary School students should have to learn an Asian language’. All of our students were debating for the first time and despite some nerves, they all performed very well.

Rukaiya Muhuseen, Kathryn Chenh and Catherine Lok argued in the negative against Overnewton 2 and lost the debate by three points. Isabel Fung, Kaitlyn Richards and Zachariah Vitale argued in the negative against Overnewton 4 and lost the debate by two points. Mehak Nagi, Iqra Siddique and Chantel Fung argued in the negative against Overnewton 1 and lost the debate by only one point.

The final debate for the junior competition will be held at the school on Thursday the 22nd of October. Parents and staff are welcome to come along and support the year 7 and year 8 students.
