Senior School Report

At this time in the school year we are leading up to final examinations for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. We hosted our Annual Year 12 Awards Night at the Clock Tower Centre on Wednesday 14th October, and Year 12 classes finish on Wednesday 21st October.
Our 2015 Awards Night proved again to be a sensational evening, with a full house of students, their families and their teachers, coming together in a joyous celebration of the college culture of success and life-long learning. Our Guest Speaker for the Evening was Ms Helen Smith, Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Helen Smith is a triple Olympian, representing Australia in Fencing at the 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games. She was Commonwealth Champion in both individual and team women’s foil, Oceania Champion and 9 times Australian Champion. In 2015, Helen became a Member (AM) in the general Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to fencing as an Olympic athlete, coach and mentor, and through a range of leadership and administrative roles. For the past five year Helen has worked in Careers Education, and was able to provide our departing Year 12 students with some fabulous insights into how to build a career.
Our final Assembly and Celebration for our Year of 2014 Students will be held at the college on the morning of Wednesday 21st October. At the conclusion of the Assembly, all Year 12 students will join together for a Celebration. The school will provide a BBQ Brunch and a “Colour Run” on the oval, commencing at 10.35am. At the conclusion of brunch, all Year 12 students will be dismissed from school and are expected to begin their study week in preparation for their final examinations.
The Year 12 Exams begin on Wednesday 28th October 2015 - with English being their first exam - and conclude four weeks later. We encourage parents to read the VCAA VCE Exam Navigator and End of Year VCAA Exam Timetable, to check on the dates and times of your child’s exams. Your child was issued with a hard copy of the Exam Navigator by the school last term, however a pdf copy of the Exam Navigator is available from the VCAA website at the following address:
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/documents/vcaanavigator_web.pdf
The VCAA VCE Exam Navigator also provides the information about what materials students are permitted to bring into each of their examinations. By reading this through with your child you can ensure that they attend their exams at the right time and with the right equipment.
The VCAA VCE Exam Navigator also has a lift out section with the End-of-year VCAA Exam Timetable.
A group of Year 11 students are continuing to attend the STRETCH program on Thursday lunchtimes. STRETCH provides support with Study Skills Exam Preparation and Time Management. This year, our Assistant Curriculum Coordinator Mr Scott Faulkner, has contributed his expertise as a Psychology teacher to help the students better understand how the mind works and what study and motivational strategies might work best for them as individuals.
The Senior Sub School is also continuing to run the fabulous “ABCN “Aspirations” Program for Year 11, with the generous partition of the staff at the Melbourne offices of Norton Rose Albright. The Aspirations Program has been a great success according to feedback from the Year11 students who participating in it. A number of the staff at Norton Rose Albright have worked with our students to develop skills in leadership, team work, creative thinking, problem solving, interview skills, positive thinking and leadership. Mentoring programs of this nature aim to build on the principles of Positive Psychology. “Positive Psychology” promotes student wellbeing and psychological resilience. The view is that these qualities are developed by focusing on personal strengths rather than weaknesses and working with these strengths to improve all aspects of your life.
Many thanks to the parents who contact us when their child is absent for any reason. This is of great assistance to the Year Level Coordinators, as we will call home regularly if there are any unexplained absences for your child. The Case Management process continues to monitor closely the attendance, achievement and individual needs of all our students. Please contact us on 9366. 2555 if you have any queries or concerns about the progress of your child.
