On Friday 9th of October Year 10 students participated in workshops run by a group of high achieving university students from the Elevate program. Students were given strategies to help them prepare for exams and achieve their best. Some helpful tips from the day include:
- When it's difficult to cram everything for revision, try creating a word document of feedback or incorrect answers from past papers. Try to correct them and focus on these weaknesses.
- Prepare mind map notes for exams.
- On the day of exams, avoid negative people or stressed out peers. They'll only make you anxious too. Block out anyone speculating or stressing about what could be on the exam. No one knows.
- When studying, take breaks every 45 minutes. Our concentration starts to fade at 50 minutes. Take a five minute break, go for a walk, make a cup of tea or do some stretches.
- Create a regular sleeping pattern. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time. Ideally get about 9 hours. This can really increase energy and concentration levels. Physical exercise will also have the same effect.
We are really fortunate with the programs offered to us by our business partners. This week we have had 10 year 10 students participate in 3 day workshops run by the Smith Family. The students have learnt about work related skills and visited a range of worksites to become more familiar to the working world. Year 10 can be challenging for many students as they are making decisions about their future and are sometimes uncertain of the pathways they wish to pursue. These programs are invaluable as often people in the workforce, outside of education, are able to offer a different perspective.
Next week, on the 19th October, 20 students will participate in an ‘Interview to Impress’ workshop run by ABCN at the Optus building in the city. At this workshop students will practise their interview skills and be guided on how to make the best impression.
Also, next week on the 21st of October, 4 Year 10 students will participate in a forum on ‘racism’. This is being run by the Whitten Project and Brimbank Council. One of our students, Hanna Nguyen of 10A, was selected to be part of a leadership training program with the Western Bulldogs and this is an opportunity which has come about because of her involvement in the program. Participation in programs like this broaden a student’s education and we are very thankful to our business partners for continuing to support the school.
With the lead up to Year 10 exams and Year 9 tests we encourage all students to be organised with their work and to ensure that they hand all work in by the due dates. Over the next few weeks we have progress reports and will be contacting parents if we have any concerns.
