Welcome

On Monday 31st July we welcome 4 students and their Leader Yoshimi Sugiura from Japan, here on exchange as part of the KSKK program.  If you see them around please say, 'Konnichi wa'.  We thank the host families for welcoming them into their homes.

On the same day we welcome Marino Norimura who is doing a 3 week teaching practice placement all the way from the International Christian University in Tokyo.  This is a very brave thing to do, and we wish her luck in her teaching endeavours.  Thank you to Mr Ma for helping to supervise Marino.

Hands-On Activities in Junior Japanese Classes

Clock Makeover

Year 8 Accelerated Japanese group has learnt to tell the time last semester. As many children nowadays are used to reading digital clocks on mobile phones and watches, we had a “Clock Makeover Activity” to encourage students to read analogue clocks.   This activity also reinforced students’ knowledge of Japanese Kanji numbers. Students designed their clock faces and replaced an original clock face with their newly designed one with Japanese Kanji numbers. Some students designed them digitally on their laptop and some drew their favourite Anime characters, etc.

Sushi Lolly Making

Year 7 Mainstream Japanese students studied food last term. They learnt how to order food and take food orders at restaurants. Students also learnt the name of many Japanese dishes and ingredients. To conclude this fun unit, “Sushi Lolly Making” was held at the end of semester 1. To imitate Sushi rice we used rice bubbles with melted butter and marshmallows mixed. Lolly snakes were used for fillings, and Roll Ups and Sour Straps were used for seaweed. Students rolled and decorated them in a plastic container with a grass shaped plastic food divider just like a real take away Sushi. Many students were very clever using chopsticks to eat them too. Well done!
