House Swimming Carnival 2019

Wow - what an amazing day. This year’s swimming carnival was one for the record books. From our new Year 7’s excitement to our high achieving and entertaining Year 12’s, I can tell that 2019 is going to be a strong year in the pool for MGC.

Many students were keen to race in the pool amongst their peers to get points for their house and swim as fast as they can. Records were broken, while some teachers got dumped in the Environment Team’s pedal-powered dunking machine.

There were many award winning costumes from a range of students and teachers for this year’s theme of “Twinning”. The executive team and environment team stalls were huge hits having sold lots of yummy sausages, cakes, brownies and drinks, with the money raised going to the charity.

Although the sun was a bit reluctant to come out it eventually later on decided to show sparking more energy amongst us all. In the end, only one house could be victorious, and the whole school waited eagerly at the end of the day for the results to be read out. Last year’s winner Maris was relegated to 3rd, with Chisholm winning their first house swimming carnival in over 6 years.

If you are in year 8-12 I ask you now, do you remember your first swim carnival with MGC?  In reality you probably don’t remember the details but as a 2019 year 7, I can definitely recall two weeks ago.

The day started off crazily, almost the entire school flooded into the gym, a mixture of Green, Purple, White, Blue and flamboyant costumes provided colour to the pool and its surrounds. Everyone was ready to scream for their house, whether it was Chisholm, Melba, Maris or Lyons we wanted our houses to win, and nothing was stopping us.

Then, the swimming commenced!

From every corner of the pool there was chatter and competition, who would win each race? Which house would come out on top? There were endless amounts of people from each age division ready to show their stuff, and what they were made of; they were ready to win. Each race brought excitement to the crowds, everyone was supporting their friends and as the scores started to add up, more fire was brought to the air.

The costume parade came next, hundreds of girls in bright and creative costumes, formed a parade, ready to show off their costumes, whether they were, twins, triplets, or massive groups of people the costume games ranked pretty high. As many showstoppers and memorable outfits paraded the perimeter of the pool the winners were decided and taking away the top spots were three very creative costumes.

As the day begun to draw to a close two of the best events were only just beginning: the tunnel ball and the water zumba. We kicked off with the Year 7 tunnel ball races, stirring up a steam in the pool even though some of us had no idea what we were doing, and in the end Chisholm came out on top. Next there was the water Zumba, the year 8’s- 12’s showed their stuff, as they partied in the water, copying off two esteemed year 12 instructors, the rest of the school were falling down in heaps of laughter.

Though my eyes it was a fantastic introduction to the carnivals at MGC.
