Well done Zoe!

Zoe C in Year 4 braved getting her head shaved in front of Stage 2 students on Friday to raise money for the World's Greatest Shave. Zoe raised just over $1300.  We're very proud of you Zoe!

NSW Junior Athletics accolades for Joel H

A huge congratulations to Joel H (Year 7) who competed at the 2021 ACPE NSW Junior Athletics Championships over the weekend. Joel competed in both the 1500m and the 800m events in the Under 14 years age group. In his 1500m race, Joel placed 2nd in NSW, picking up a silver medal with a PB time! The next day, Joel raced in the 800m event, finishing in 6th place in NSW with an U14 national qualifying time (even with sore legs from the race the day before).

Joel has qualified in both events to represent NSW in the 2021 Australian Junior Championships to be held from 12 April to 19 April 2021. Congratulations Joel! We wish you all the best for the upcoming Championships!

2021 Primary State Swimming

On Monday 8 March, Luka C and Jai D represented NCS at the Primary State Swimming Championships held in Blacktown.

Luka and Jai were NCS's only representatives in a swimming meet that was significantly impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. In total, we had 8 athletes finish in the top 3 positions at Zone, but 6 were unable to attend, mainly due to parents and spectators not being allowed at this event.

For Luka and Jai, this was a great chance to show their God-given talents and abilities in their swimming races. Both were competing in the 50m breaststroke race for their age group. Both were nervous to be racing at such a high level, in such a famous pool (in the past this has been the site of a world record being set) and against a high quality field of competitors.

Incredibly, both Jai and Luka finished in 22nd place overall in their events. Jai was a few seconds away from a P.B. but Luka managed to swim about a second faster than her time at the recent Zone carnival. We are so proud of their efforts and feel sure that they'll be able to swim at future CSSA NSW State Swimming events next year and beyond.

Congratulations to these students and thanks to both families for providing transport and being willing NCS South Coast Zone Managers on the day.

AFL - Awesome Footy Legends!

Friday 5 March was the Stage 3 AFL Auskick Gala Day for the Paul Kelly Cup, an annual competition around NSW and the ACT to find the best primary school teams.  It also provided a chance for our school to play against other local schools.

NCS took two teams, a girls' team, the NCS Bulldogs and a boys' team, the NCS Magpies. The girls were missing two players on the day due to sickness, so played against other teams with a couple short on the field. This was hard to tell, as they acquitted themselves admirably. Although they ended up losing three matches, they were certainly not disgraced in any of them on the scoreboard. In their second round match, they took on one of the eventual finalists, St. Michael's, only losing by two points in a 19-21 thriller. India M, Tayla G and Enya T provided experience as all had played before outside of school. Mim D, Hannah J and Jada B were other players who kicked goals, made vital tackles and generally played effectively. All 10 girls were fabulous representatives for NCS, playing fairly, congratulating other players and referees and coaches.

The boys' team started with a narrow one point loss 12-13. They lifted for their second game thrashing a NAC team by about 50 points. Their last match was against St. Michael's and was a 7-all thriller with end-to-end action. James M kicked multiple goals in all matches and was undoubtedly NCS' 'best and fairest' on the ground. Thomas HS was another who seemed to take play to the next level, tackling 'everything that moved' in midfield and playing hard, but fair. There were also goals from Caleb M, Harry D and others. Tyla B, Caleb G and Cooper D were also strong performers who led by example.

The NCS Magpies narrowly missed out on making the final on a countback of points scored, which was so unfortunate. Both teams stayed to watch the finals matches, which were well supported and fun to spectate. A great day was had, with barely an injury to speak of and some fabulous fair play. Our students were a credit to their school and their families, exhibiting terrific behaviour throughout. Thanks to parents, carers and friends who attended, as well as Ms Matts and Mr Bray who also helped coach and supervise our twenty-three students from Stage 3. Great job!

Shoalhaven International Women's Day Competition

Congratulations to Cassandra B who recently entered and won a Shoalhaven International Women's Day Competition open to 14-25 year old women. The competition topic was "Journeys of Resilience".

Cassie's story was titled "Paper".

Within my chamber walls distorted pieces of parchment lie on dull burgundy carpet, covered in dust. They stare accusingly at me. The ink that bathes them screams and scowls satirically, almost as if to tell me I am worth nothing. I look away. Letters form ceaselessly across the crinkled surfaces. I refuse to look, but I can still read them in my mind’s eye. CARELESS; SCUM; WORTHLESS; CRAZY; YOU BELONG IN THE LOONEY BIN! I close my eyes as the tears roll down my face. What a cliche! I cry messily, noisily. Snot drips from my nose. No delicate princess here. Raw emotions spin and spiral around me like giant moths, keening bats. I see them in brilliant, vibrant colour. Black, red, purple, indigo blue. I open my eyes again. The colours fade and retreat into the walls. My room is just a room. Yes, it’s a mess. It’s cluttered, a trip hazard for all who dare venture in. Papers lie strewn across the floor. But on the wall opposite my bed the muted green wall hanging still sweetly whispers, “Love…dance…sing… live”. I wipe my eyes and blow my nose. I will never allow the monster within to define who I will become.

Curry with Mrs Meek

On Monday 15 March, Mrs Meek visited Stage 5 Food Technology for an international curry extravaganza! We learnt about the flavour profiles of curries from different cultures and then students had the opportunity to 'choose their own adventure'! Each group chose a different curry and blended their own curry paste without a recipe! Each group produced a delicious curry from scratch. Matt and Cohen took out the award for the spiciest curry of the day! Thank you for visiting us Mrs Meek!

Harmony Day - Friday 19 March

On Friday 19 Marchall students were encouraged to wear an item of orange clothing to celebrate cultural diversity.

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging, designed to celebrate Australia's multi-cultural identity. Australia’s success as a multi-cultural nation is underwritten by our values, our mutual understanding of our rights and responsibilities as citizens and national language and our respect for each other. The message of respect and belonging can be lived by each of us, every day, not just on Harmony Day.

Pi Day - 14 March (celebrated on Monday)

It was Pi Day last Sunday 14 March, so Secondary celebrated by seeing how many pi digits students could recite in the Monday morning assembly. The top two students were Kent E (Year 7) who was able to recite 600 digits, and Ollie E (Year 10) who was able to recite the 20 digits. Both Kent and Ollie won a pie for their efforts. The Secondary Maths teachers also dressed up for the occasion. In Primary, Mrs Burge's Year 3 class made pi biscuits to mark the day.
