Instrumental Music Information Night

On Thursday 4th March the Heathmont College Instrumental Music Department hosted an information evening for students who are considering learning an instrument or for those returning to lessons.  The Hope Centre was filled with students and family members who were treated to student performances, staff presentations and demonstrations on a variety of instruments.  This was followed up by an opportunity to meet the teachers and enroll for lessons.  It also gave students a chance to convert their recent instrumental trials to an ongoing place in the Instrumental Music Program.

Woodwind teacher, Ms. Emily Kimpton, opened the evening playing a collection of themes from famous movies on the flute.  She also demonstrated clarinet, discussed saxophone and explored the origins of Woodwind instruments.  Mr. Ewen Morris gave a short trumpet presentation and spoke about his musical journey from high school instrumental lessons to becoming a Brass and Maths teacher.  Ms. Christine Walshe spoke about the calming and centring effects of String instruments, and shared the deep, peaceful resonance of the cello.  Ms. Misahel Figuiera and Ms. Nik Salter spoke about the Voice & Piano programs, school ensembles, and led a whole-audience poly-rhythmic clapping activity.  Ms Alison Fane played a highly-technical piece for snare drum and digital recording called Stop Speaking (Andy Akiho), which explores the way technology is taking over our lives.

There were three fabulous student performances.  Ella B (ukulele/voice) and Matthew S (bass) gave a haunting rendition of The Cranberries iconic protest song, Zombie.  Lachlan H presented a wonderful classical guitar piece, Opus 50 No 13 by Marcus Guilliani, which showcased Lachy's excellent technique, performance skills and musicianship.  Claire P rounded up the evening with a beautiful rendition of Harry Style's  Sign of the Times.

All in all, it was a terrific night.  If there are any students who are wishing to learn an instrument and missed out on attending this great evening of Instrumental Music, please contact Nik Salter, Instrumental Music Coordinator at nik.salter@education.vic.gov.au
