Message from School Council

Dear parents, guardians, and members of the Heathmont Community,

As we’re fast approaching the end of Term 1 already, the Heathmont College School Council year is also drawing to a close, and on the 23rd of Feb we held our final meeting prior to the AGM.

The 2020 School Council year was quite a ride, with a quick (and successful) shift to holding virtual council meetings for almost the entire year, farewells to some significant and well-loved school leaders, an amazing series of construction & infrastructure projects, and a great deal of recruitment work, which resulted in some fantastic and welcome additions to our school leadership group.  When I look back at the year, it’s hard to believe that we fitted it all in!

The final school council meeting was one that we were finally able to conduct in person again on the school grounds, which was a nice & fitting way to farewell one of our longest serving council members, Daryl Perry.

Daryl has held a variety of roles on the council over the years, including Treasurer, Vice President, and President, and we cannot thank him enough for his amazing contribution and service to the college.  At this last meeting, Daryl gave us a wonderful recount of his time on council, and we farewelled & thanked him on behalf of the entire Heathmont community. All the best Daryl!

In other council news, we’ve been working closely with Nicole McDonald, who is the President of the Parent’s Association as well as a co-opted member on council, to review the role of the Parent’s Association in the college community.  We’re really hoping to re-invigorate the Parent’s Association and its purpose at the college, and we’ve made some great progress in this area.  We’ll be able to share more information on this shortly, but we could already use a lot of help in the Parent’s Association, so if you’re interested in getting involved, please reach out.  Now is a great time to get involved, at a time when we’re trying to implement some change and come up with some new ideas, so fresh ideas and different perspectives would be very welcome & helpful.

Lastly, on behalf of school council I’d like to thank all of you for your cooperation and understanding through the last 12 months.  With all this disruption and change we’ve experienced at Heathmont College, it’s been challenging for everyone, and at School Council we’ve found it wonderful to see how all parents, guardians, students, teachers, staff, and the broader community have met and overcome the challenges.

Kind regards,

Henk Westerveld

School Council President
