SECONDARY CAMPUS UPDATES

YEAR 7

What an amazing start it has been for our Year 7 Cohort. They have all adapted quickly to the challenges of Secondary School and are starting to thrive. We have been very impressed with their behaviour, work ethic and their adaptability, especially during our most recent snap lockdown.

The highlight of the year so far has most certainly been our camp to Phillip Island. The students had an amazing time trying out activities like archery, ropes courses and the giant swing. We also got to see some of the amazing natural beauty of Phillip Island on our beach walk and through exploring our campsite, we even met some of the local wildlife. Overall the camp was an amazing chance for students to form new friendships, strengthen old ones and build incredible memories of their first term of secondary school.

YEAR 8

The Year 8's are starting to adjust to the higher expectation the teachers have of them this year. This term, the Year 8 students are working on  print advertisements in English and the feedback from the English team has been positive with the students  demonstrating their creative and persuasive skills.  The students have already chosen Luna Park as their end of year activitiy.

Just a reminder for Year 8 that it is crucial to attend school and class on time to maximise learning opportunities. School uniform requires the compulsory wearing of black shoes as decided by School Council. Arrangements can be made for students unable to meet uniform requirements where necessary.

YEAR 9

Our Year 9 cohort was one of the first in Victoria to complete their Morrisby profiling for 2021. This is the first step amongst many that will help support and scaffold student pathways at The Lakes.

This week, students received their interview time where they will unpack the profiling aptitudes and potential top ten career prospects. Stay tuned for more pathways information and activities.

SENIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 10

Our 10's have begun enthusiastically taking on the excitement and challenges of beginning Senior School. A number of Year 10 students this year are undertaking Trade Tester courses at the Outer Northern Trade Tasting Centre (ONTTC), and VET subjects at The Lakes and at other secondary schools as part of our VET Cluster and VCE subjects, with several Year 10 students studying two Year 11 subjects this year at The Lakes. Students have settled in well, and are using the facilities in the VCE Study Area. While this area is set aside for Year 11 students and students studying Year 11 subjects as a place to work during free classes, the facilities are available to Years 10 and 11 students. These include a full-sized fridge, sandwich press and kettle.

YEAR 11 VCE & VCAL

2021 has seen an exciting start to the school year and we are very proud of the attitude, enthusiasm and commitment to their futures that our students have already shown. We have Year 11 students undertaking VCAL studies, Year 11 subjects at The Lakes, Year 11 and Year 12 subjects at other schools and through our Network Cluster and Virtual School Victoria, and VET and Certificate subjects on-campus and at other secondary educational schools. This is an exciting time for our students and our school, and student engagement in their studies is showing that our ability to offer subjects both at The Lakes and beyond has afforded our students the best opportunities for their future endeavours.

A few reminders for our VCE students and parents:

  • SACs/SATs (School Assessed Coursework an School Assessed Tasks) – if a student misses a SAC or SAT a medical certificate is required in order to resit or complete this task;
  • The required attendance rate for VCE students to pass subjects is 90% - this includes approved and unapproved absences;
  • It is expected that students undertake home study in order to ensure they complete all tasks assigned by teachers, revise for SACs, SATs and exams and identify any areas of study they may require assistance or clarification with. All our Lakes secondary teachers are ready and willing to assist students with any queries they may have;
  • VCE students are permitted to bring a dictionary to SACs and exams. These are on student’s book lists, and are a valuable tool for students in all year levels. The Lakes is not in a position to lend dictionaries to students for assessment tasks. Purchase of a dictionary for your child would be appreciated.
