St Vincent DePaul and SVC Vinnies
The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation that aspires to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in those who have been made poor. The St Vincent de Paul Society, or Vinnies as most Australians know it by, offers a hand up to people in need while respecting their dignity, sharing hope, and helping people to take control of their own destiny. In Australia Vinnies has more than 60,000 members and volunteers, who work hard to assist people in need and combat social injustice across Australia.
In Hobart Vinnies volunteers work hard in second-hand clothing and furniture shops and warehouses and are present in our community providing meals from Louis Food Van and shelter at Bethlehem House. Another important side to Vinnies work is their presence in our schools and both our Junior school and Senior school students have formed Vinnies groups to raise awareness and funds to help people less fortunate than themselves.
Throughout the Year 7 New Beginnings Service Journey under the guidance of Ms Farron Boxall, many of the Year 7 students were introduced to the work that Vinnies do and met our region leader Mr Simon Terhell. He will also work with our student groups to help plan and implement events such as the winter Clothing Drive and possibly a winter solidarity sleep out.
Last Tuesday night the Vinnies Student Mass was held at St Therese’s church in Moonah and Mr Shane Rumbold and Year 8 student JJ Hovington and his family were present. JJ received the candle and badges for our school group, and they will now begin working together to plan many fun and meaningful activities and events throughout the year.
