VCAL NEWS

2021 Year 11 VCAL classes started off smoothly. As always, VCAL’s first major job was to help run Swimming Sports. 11V helped with timing of the swimming races, and 11W handed sandwiches out to the teachers and helped run the novelty events such as: Mannequin Relay, Cork Snatch, Body Board Racing and Buried Treasure.

Year 11 VCAL’s first excursion was to Werribee Zoo. There we learnt about OH&S in enclosures at the zoo and we got to walk around and look at the animals as well as finding out information about each species.

For Personal Development Skills, our first major assignment was a Walks Victoria task. Each student was to research a walking route in the surrounding suburbs to which they lived, and to find some points interest. Students were then to present their walks to their classmates and to their teacher, where the classroom teacher then chose which walk their class would carry out during class time. This project helped us develop our planning and organisation skills, as well as developing our self-management and problem solving skills.

One of the big differences of VCAL is work placement, as well as our VET on a Wednesday. On a Wednesday, typically in the afternoon, VCE students can take a VET subject as one of their classes, while it is compulsory for VCAL students. VET is a class of the students choosing and is typically a lot more hands on than other classes. In addition to their VET course, VCAL students carry out a work placement on a Thursday, generally relating to their VET course. Placement often reflects a normal workday in the student’s field of choice.

All of our respective students have settled in well to both their vet course and work placement and we wish them continued success throughout the year.
