Music

Prep/1s explore musical language to explain how music is used in storytelling!

Junior students have been exploring how music is used to help us to tell stories. They have been noticing how music can show how characters are feeling, whether they are happy, sad, excited or scared! Music can tell us when something exciting is about to happen and can build tension before a dramatic plot twist. Students have enjoyed drawing their favourite scenes and recording their voices talking about what the music was doing in that part. Listen to Aidan so passionately describing the music in “Music Land” and explaining how “Even if you can’t see, it tells you how they are feeling!”

Kandinsky Creations - Yr 2/3s Draw their Music!https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Kandinsky/

Year 2/3 students have been exploring creating music inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky, who compared painting to making music. Students create their own drawings and then hear them turn into sound.  Watch Nelson from Yr 2/3 show his creation and explain what he has enjoyed about the process.

You can try this great resource for free on any kind of laptop, iPad or even phone. Try experimenting with your child with these ideas:

  • Ask your child: does your picture sound the way you expected? What do you like about the sound of your picture? Is there anything you would change?
  • Draw a picture on the screen and play it back with the different sound/colour options – which one do you like the best? Why?
  • Use the coloured circle to the left of the play button to change the sounds
  • Draw some horizontal lines on the screen at different heights – what is the difference between the lines drawn at the bottom of the screen and those drawn in the middle or the top of the screen?
  • Draw a triangle in the middle of the screen.  What sound does it make? Can you recognise the instrument? What happens when you draw another triangle above the first one?  Does it sound the same or different? Do you recognise the instrument? Try a third triangle low down on the screen.

Years 3-6 Compose Music Using Songmakerhttps://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker

Students have been creating their own musical compositions using Songmaker, another of Chrome Music Lab’s fantastic online resources, to explore sound and create with sound. Students have created their own melodic compositions, exploring various instruments and adding beat and rhythm using bass and snare drums. Students have recorded reflections on their learning, including what they have enjoyed, challenges experienced, and what they would like to explore more of. Watch Amy in Yr 5/6 talk about how there is no “wrong answer in creativity!”
