Year 9 News…

Well we are officially over halfway through the term with plenty of assessment happening across all subjects in Year 9. It is therefore expected that all students should be busy each night completing at least 1.5 – 2 hours of homework or study. Should your child struggle to be able to complete the homework within this given time frame please contact the subject teacher through the college diary by writing a note as we do not want students spending hours upon hours each night in books. Within this 1.5 – 2 hours of homework it is expected that students do not have electronic devices other than their laptop with them to maintain good study habits. Your child should also be conducting their homework in a good study environment that has no other distractions such as the television, and loud music and at a desk or dining room table to maintain good posture and attitude towards learning. Please see below the upcoming assessment dates indicated on the college website Year 9 Assessment Calendar for your perusal.

Two weeks ago we held our annual St Mary’s Day which was slightly different from previous years due to Covid-19. However, it was wonderful to be able to continue to have the event with some changes. All students enjoyed the day and the celebration of our St Mary’s family was well embedded once again.

Last week you would have received an email about the upcoming Year 9 Pastoral Day that has been organized in Week 10 to be held at Trinity Beach. The form requires your permission for your child to attend the day and take part in the many activities that will be held on the day. This pastoral day will be a pivotal memory for the Year 9 cohort as a day of teamwork, individual accomplishment, collaboration and of course FUN! This will be a compulsory day for all Year 9 students and an email from home will be required should your child be unable to attend. Please let me know at your earliest convenience if your child is unable to attend via email lmcbryde@cns.catholic.edu.au

Over the past few week’s students have been exposed to some teamwork activities in our year level assemblies. Students have been working in their groups which they will be in for the pastoral day. It is anticipated that by involving the students in these activities some strengths and weaknesses will be established that they can then work with on the day. With such a large group of students I believe that it can become difficult for students to know everyone within their year level. For this reason, it is excellent to be able to bring all the students together to work on building relationships and positive emotions.

I look forward to the next four weeks that remain for Term 3 with a big focus on the Year 9 Pastoral Day. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your child at St Mary’s do not hesitate to get in contact with me via the college office or the above-mentioned email address.

Kind regards
