The Year 7 Homeroom team have also been using a whole lot of different ‘hooks’ to get girls talking in AM homeroom sessions each day.  We have Maths Mondays, Tell me about it Tuesdays, Would you rather Wednesdays, Think outside the box Thursdays and Figure it out Fridays. I have been impressed with the level of participation from the girls.  Think outside the box Thursday has been popular and two of the girls in St Nea have come up with the following images after having been given the following:

This is not an ice-cream cone, what do you think it could be?

Year 10

Year 7 Pen Pals

On Thursday the 27th of August all the Year 10 students got allocated a Year 7 pen pal. Pen pal is an opportunity for us as Year 10 students to give back to the community by getting to know the Year 7 students and help them feel supported and welcomed into our Killester community. Due to the current unprecedented times the Year 7s have only been able to experience six weeks of the Killester spirit, therefore having a pen pal we certainly can help guide them and give them an insight to our wonderful school. We communicate with each other via email and on Thursday 27th Aug all the Year 10's sent out an email to introduce themselves to their pen pal, from there we kept sending emails back and forth to get to know each other. I believe this is a great chance to not only get to know the Year 7's but to help improve the Year 10’s responsibility, teamwork, leadership skills. I strongly encourage all the Year 10’s to keep communicating with their pen pal so that one day when we are all back at school we can be more comfortable to talk to each other in person. Thank you to all the leaders and teachers who made this program possible.

VicRoads Presentation

On August 12th, each Year 10 Homeroom dialed into individual calls led by a representative of VicRoads. Throughout the calls, we followed along with a visual and audio presentation while being asked questions by the VicRoads leader. We discussed the Safe System and the role we play in making our roles safer, how to make safer choices and about staged approaches to learning how to drive.

We started by watching an advertisement from VicRoads on keeping our roads safe and discussed the video in detail. Next, we watched crash tests and looked at outcomes of accidents when driving at different speeds and the safety of vehicles based on their quality and features. The quality of the car and the number of prevention features on a vehicle can defer the damage when an accident occurs. Then we looked at safer roads and how sometimes the quickest way to get to a destination is not necessarily the safest. We also learned that some roads have safety features built in to make a five-star road, making our travel safer. Then we looked at how we can make our roads safer based on our choices when driving and viewed a graph showing us the number of accidents people experience depending on what level of driving they were on. We also discussed why the number of cases varied as they did, for example, why do red P-platers get into more crashes? Why don’t L-platers get into more accidents?

We then spoke about staged approaches when learning how to drive. This includes the graduated licensing system. Different requirements and restrictions are depending on the level of license you are on. We also looked at learning how to drive on our L plates as many of us at our age are approaching the stage of learning. There are different stages you can follow in learning how to drive before reaching our P plates. We then looked at different conditions of roads and which level of driving you would undertake these roads. It was very informative and relevant as soon, we will be learning to drive.

A big thank you to all the teachers who helped organise these calls and to VicRoads for teaching us such valuable and relevant information, especially for our age.
