PASTEL BUBBLES

PASTEL BUBBLES

For our next project we looked at tone and form to create realistic bubbles. Tone is the lightness or darkness of a colour or image. It is also used to create form or make an object look 3D. We studied some bubble photos for inspiration and observed the shapes, colours, reflections, and translucency of them. After practicing some chalk pastel techniques, students drew their own bubbles, which were so striking, colourful, shiny and realistic!

I created bubbles using coloured pencils. I practiced drawing circles and overlapped them to make them look transparent. I also curved the lines and left more of the sides without colour. To make the bubbles look transparent, I left some parts blank while blending the colours together, in the middle has the most colour whereas the sides have none. I also drew the bubbles to be able to be seen behind each other.

My chosen medium was coloured pencils. I started off by experimenting with drawing the bubbles with pencils. I had a reference picture on hand. To make my bubbles look 3D I made sure I used contour lines to replicate the 3D look of the bubble. To make my bubbles look translucent I made sure to use black paper making the bubble stand out more and I left most of the centre black. Lastly, I added a little sparkle with a white gel pen.

My chalk pastel practice looks like a mess but I was seeing what colours look good and how I was going to make a bubble, because it’s hard. I was a little scared to make them because I had never done it before, but when I showed my little brother who’s not even two, he shouted out, “Bubbles”, which made me feel like I did a good job.
