CFA VISITS KINDER

By Kirsty Meese (Kinder Director)

On Friday we were blessed to have our local CFA come and visit Kinder. During our visit we learnt that Firefighters do more than fight fires, they also; look after humans, look after animals, get cats out of trees or air conditioning ducts, burn off, light fires deliberately to keep the area safe, but most importantly, Firefighters help.

During the CFA visit we learnt the difference between the uniforms that Firefighters wear for varying fires, and what they might keep in their pockets; gloves, ropes, knife, seat belt cutter, window breaker, notepad and pens, matches, a hazmat guide and hand warmers. Although, what surprised the Kinder class the most about our CFA visit, was that not all fire engines are red! The light vehicle that they brought to visit us was white.

Team Kinder would like to say a big THANK YOU to Belgrave Heights & South CFA for visiting us on Friday and for all the hard work in our community.

GIRLS IN PHYSICS BREAKFAST

Dr Emily Roberts (Physics Teacher)

Last Thursday, six Senior School girls went with Dr Roberts and Mrs Farrand to the Monash University Girls in Physics Breakfast

The very early start was well worth it as we heard Dr Amanda Kay, an astrophysicist from Monash University, speak about her research into how the heavy elements of the periodic table are formed in stars.  Her talk was fascinating as she explained to us the importance of the life cycle of a star, black holes, red giant stars, neutron stars, and supernovae in creating all the elements of the periodic table.

Each one of our BHCS girls sat at a table with girls from other schools, also studying Physics, and each table had at least two women in Physics / STEM careers who could talk to the girls about what they did, and how they got there.  It was inspirational to talk to and hear from women working in Physics and in STEM.

The whole morning was a great opportunity to explore the world beyond secondary education, and after our tour of the universe we made it back to school in time for the second period of the day.

YEAR 11 GRAVITATE CAMP

By Rowan Jeffery ( Gravitate Coordinator)

Last weekend Gravitate students headed off to their second camp - all about Leadership. The Gravitate Leadership Camp was all about equipping students with skills they need to be great leaders! One great part of this camp is that students got to choose their electives over the weekend. What electives could they choose? Be trained in how to give an unforgettable talk ; How to run games like a pro.; Discover how to use your hobbies to change the world; Grow your heart for mission; Practice how to hear God’s voice; How to fight fair (conflict). There were so many fabulous opportunities.

Leadership is of course, far more than developing skills. Jesus turned the concept of leadership upside down! Just like so much in His kingdom, being a leader is not about gaining power or self-promotion. A leader is captivated by a vision of something greater than themselves and brings people along for the journey. Indeed, a leader who seeks to be Christlike lays down their life for others – servant leadership. A true Christian leader is first someone who hears Jesus’ call, “follow me.” They are willing to follow Jesus even when it is costly.

It was a challenging weekend as students learnt what it was to serve and be the leader they are called to be.

YEAR 12 VCAL TEACH OUR PREPPIES

By Caleb Lobbe (Sports Coordinator - Senior)

Last Tuesday the Year 12 VCAL students went up to the Junior School to teach skills during two different Prep PE classes.

For quite a few weeks, the Year 12 students had been working on preparing short lesson plans (in pairs) to teach a sports skill to the Preps. They also spent time practicing their teaching in the lead-up to this day.

When the time came to teach the Prep students, there were a few nerves, but once the first lessons got underway, the Year 12’s did a fantastic job!

The Prep students had a ball, and to watch the smiling faces from both Prep students and Year 12’s when they interacted together, was a huge joy.

Well done to the Year 12 VCAL students and the Preps for a fantastic time working together!
