Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Joshua Wolter, Assistant Principal

With 9 weeks into this term, we are already over the half way point of Term 2. Students at ESC are finalising assessments and SACs and our Year 10's and 11's are preparing for end of Semester Exams. It is a busy time for teachers and students alike however, our students have been showing the values of commitment and perseverance to achieve their academic goals.  Teachers likewise are providing students support with their academic learning and wellbeing to help them achieve at their point of need. Students are always encouraged to review with their teacher, their academic goals and identify the next steps in their learning to achieve them, and experience success. We wish all students the very best with their upcoming assessments and exams.

ESC also recently successfully completed NAPLAN 'Online' for the time. Despite absences and some technical disruptions, the school was able to finalise the majority of tests with a completion rate between 90 and 95% for most tests. A review of our first NAPLAN online experience will occur very soon and students and parents will be provided with the opportunity to give feedback on what worked well and how NAPLAN Online can be improved for next year.  We await the results which should arrive much more quickly than when they were paper based and we congratulate all students on their completion of NAPLAN in 2022. Well done!

Improving literacy is a key priority in the Epping Secondary College strategic plan for the next four years. Recently, we have been fortunate to secure the expertise of two teaching partners from the Differentiated Support for School Improvement (DSSI) initiative, North West Region, to support us in improving literacy teaching and learning over the next 12 months. The two teaching partners, Annie Kan and Hung Mok, are both experienced in guiding and supporting school improvement through helping build structures and frameworks around various initiatives and refining and finessing teaching practice. They will be working with our Literacy Leaders at the school to help improve our literacy teaching and learning frameworks and practices on a regular basis throughout this year and into next year. As part of their work, the teaching partners will undertake observations in the classroom, give demonstration classes, provide professional learning on literacy strategies and data analysis, and work with teachers to help refine literacy teaching practices at the school. Students too will regularly have the opportunity to give their feedback to the teaching partners about their learning experience at ESC and through this, student voice will also inform literacy frameworks, teaching and learning practices.

ESC is continuing to forge ahead with initiatives that bring opportunities to provide excellence in teaching and learning and we will continue to update our school community about the important work we do to support our students and improve our school. Thank you for your support.
