Grade 2

Explore the Learning in Grade 2

In Term 4, Grade 2 students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

English

In Term 4 in Reading we will be focusing on summarising and retelling stories and information, sentence grammar, fluency, features of information texts, the main idea and key details in nonfiction texts, persuasion and doing some reader’s theatre to support the student’s fluency, comprehension and intonation.

It is really important that the children continue to read daily with an adult and to practise retelling the stories and information from the texts that they have been reading.

The students will continue to have a weekly SMART spelling focus that will require practise at school and at home.

In Writing the students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebook entries to record, develop and expand on their ideas for Writing.  The students will investigate planning styles to enhance the quality of their writing.  We will continue to use narrative quick writes to improve the students writing stamina and work on their individual goals.  We will also begin to explore using persuasion in their writing.

Mathematics

During Maths sessions this term, students will continue to focus on correct number formation, while developing their understanding of place value and the number system. They will engage in many hands-on tasks and activities as they explore clock time, capacity and volume. Students will be encouraged to develop purposeful language relating to position, direction and movement while learning about location. This term there will be a heavy emphasis on problem solving, where students will apply their knowledge of the mathematical concepts covered this year to real world situations.

Inquiry

In Inquiry we will be investigating the Big Question: How can we help take responsibility to look after our environment? Our Key Questions will be:

- How can we leave a tiny footprint?

- Why are the 5Rs important (reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, refuse)

- What would happen if no one took responsibility?

In week 3 we will be going on an excursion to Ecolinc in Bacchus Marsh to learn more about techniques we can use to minimise waste entering the environment.  We are also hoping to work with Barwon Coast to go on a rock pool ramble to develop deeper connections to our local environment.

Positive Education

In Positive Education in Term 4 we will be focusing on Character Strengths which are representative of each arm of the BHPS PERMA model for wellbeing, (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment). We will be revisiting Persistence and Gratitude and modelling optimism by learning about Hope, Leadership, Fairness and Wisdom. From the Respectful Relationships curriculum, we will look at Positive Coping because helping students to learn a range of positive coping skills will allow them to develop and practise these skills and enable them to cope with future changes and challenges which inevitably occur throughout life.
