Grade Prep

Explore the Learning in Grade Prep

In Term 4, Grade Prep students will be learning about the following topics and skills:

English

In reading his term we will continue to work on accuracy and fluency along with our comprehension focusses of inferring, predicting, visualising, asking questions, retelling and exploring text features of fiction and non fiction books.

We will be completing two Writing Cycles and students will write their own narrative and non fiction books. Students will be immersed in both text types and explore their elements. We will continue to learn about the traits that makes good writing and how we can develop these in our own writing.

Our SMART Spelling continues and we will introduce split diagraphs such as 'a-e' and trigraphs such as 'igh'.

Mathematics

During Term 4 in maths we will revisit place value, counting, addition, subtraction and division. As students are becoming more confident with the operations we will look to build number fluency and encourage students to develop and use more mental strategies. Money is a new topic that we will introduce. This is lots of fun as we will create a class shop and do some play based learning with money.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic is called ‘It’s Alive!’ In this unit we will be exploring the features of living things, what they need to survive, different habitats and learn how animals adapt to their environment. To support this unit we will make use of our amazing environment by heading down to the river and doing Beach School with Lucy from Sandy Feet and also visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Positive Education

In Term 4 we will be focussing on Character Strengths which are representative of each arm of the BHPS PERMA model for wellbeing, (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment). We will be revisiting Persistence and Gratitude and modelling optimism by learning about Hope, Leadership, Fairness and Wisdom. From the Respectful Relationships curriculum, we will look at Positive Coping because helping students to learn a range of positive coping skills will allow them to develop and practise these skills and enable them to cope with future changes and challenges which inevitably occur throughout life.
