STEM
Grade | Topics and Skills |
---|---|
Grade Prep | In term four students will continue to explore our edible garden by planting their own sunflower seeds and looking at the life cycle of a plant. They will learn more about our local environment by finding out about hooded plovers and other native animals that live at the beach. Students will also be looking at how to care for and protect our local areas. |
Grade 1 & 2 | Over term four students will be out in the garden learning about companion planting. They will take part in planting and caring for pumpkin, sweet corn and climbing beans. Students will also investigate what makes healthy soil and how this impacts the food we grow. They will also further their knowledge on the local environment and how to look after it. Focussing on the animals that live there, how to be a responsible beach user and erosion. |
Grade 3 & 4 | This term students will be focussing on migratory shorebirds and their amazing journey to the arctic each year. They will learn about the different species and the threats they face with habitat loss, through the book ‘A Shorebird Flying Adventure’ by Jackie Kerin and Milly Formby. We will also be looking more closely at flight by exploring lift, thrust, drag and lift and some of the milestones of flight. Students will also get out in the edible garden space and engage with a variety of garden science experiments including looking at simple photosynthesis experiments. |
Grade 5 | This term Grade Five students will be working on activities around plants and how they grow, using the garden responsibly and the science of gardening. They will then be using this knowledge to educate their new buddies (2023 Prep students) about what’s in the garden and how to care for it. Students will also be focussing on shorebirds and their incredible migratory journey each year. They will be looking at flight in more detail including the history of flight and the forces of lift, thrust, drag and weight. |
Grade 6 | Grade Six students will be focussing on experiments over Term Four around reversible and irreversible changes. They will plan and write up their experiments, make predictions using prior knowledge and record their findings. Students will also look at the local plants of the Barwon Heads area including our coastal woodland environment (Moonah). They will learn about some of the plants that make up this ecosystem and identify them by drawing and looking at key features. |

ART
Grade | Topics and Skills |
---|---|
Grade Prep | This term, Foundation students will be introduced to printmaking. They will be exploring and experimenting to find out how the process works, learning to use and gradually master control over the relevant tools, media, materials and techniques. They will be creating an architectural image using stamps, patterns using found objects and Jasper Johns’ style rubbings. Later in the term they will embark on rotations of choice based activities where they will learn to plan, prepare, create, display and discuss their own individual art works |
Grade 1 | In fourth term, Grade One students will be investigating making monoprints. They will look at how lines create images and how through a structured process those images can be reproduced on a variety of surfaces. In the latter half of the term students will be engaged in ‘Artist’s Voice’ based art activities where they will be encouraged to work independently, take risks and display persistence as they create their own unique artworks. |
Grade 2 | Grade Two students will be designing and making collagraphs. Collagraphs are printing plates which are made using cardboard shapes and flat found objects to create a raised image. Paint is then applied to the collagraph and paper pressed onto it to create a printed image. Through this particular printmaking process students will learn about shapes, line, texture and composition. After the printmaking unit, students will engage in art stations that will teach them about ‘artistic’ behaviour namely the ability to design, organise materials, create, clean-up, show and explain artworks. |
Grade 3 | Students in Grade Three will be creating a print which will show mirror images. Through this process they will learn about the art elements of line and shape as well as the principles of balance and pattern. Students will engrave images onto foam plates and print them onto papers that the children have prepared themselves. In the second half of the term students will be engaged in self directed tasks that involve the qualities that practising artists value such as persistence, planning and a sense of adventure. |
Grade 4 | This term, Grade Four students will be investigating patterns, repetition and rhythm as they create artworks that are inspired by insects.Students will be making printing plates that will allow for multiple colours and textures to be displayed in the final image. Following printmaking Grade Fours will begin a ‘student as artist’ program. During this time children will have control over subject matter, materials, and approach. The resulting pieces should reflect growth in the areas of creativity, innovation, independence, decision making, and problem solving. |
Grade 5 | Grade Five students will begin the term creating collagraphs. These bas-relief printing plates are created by layering card and other flat materials. The resulting plate has a variety of raised shapes and lines that when rubbed over or printed, make an image. This image can be repeated again and again. Through this process students will learn about different materials and techniques that artists use to create prints. Following printmaking, students will then immerse themselves in choice based rotations. They will re-engage with mediums that have previously been used but this time they are responsible for the planning, preparing, creating, displaying, discussing and cleaning. |
Grade 6 | Following the completion of their fabulous masks, students will return to their ceramic pieces. These round clay looms will be threaded and used to create a simple circular weave. Following this, Grade Sixes will begin a unit on mono-printing. While learning about line and shape students will engrave foam plates and make a series of prints using their own design. Their final weeks of visual art will be about students taking over the process. As artists, students will act independently to plan, create and display an artwork of their own making. |
