School of Entrepreneurs

What’s happening in the School of Entrepreneurs?

Year 10 are currently undergoing a program to examine what they want to do in their future.  Year 10 is an important time for students as they begin to consider their subject selections for Year 11, 2023, and the courses they intend to take to the HSC in 2024. Year 10 students are currently exploring their strengths, interests and motivation in line with their purpose and subjects offered by St Luke’s in order to select subjects for year 11.  Information regarding the subjects being offered at St Luke’s in 2023 is available on the Next Level Self Website.

At St Lukes’, there are a number of options for students to explore in addition to obtaining their HSC. For example, with the work that students have completed through Life Design, all students in year 10 are able to apply for recognition of prior learning for two units towards an 8 unit Diploma program with Kaplan Business School. With this program, along with additional recognition of prior learning, and direct delivery of some units with Kaplan, students are able to obtain credit towards a Diploma while still studying their HSC. The diploma program allows direct entry into university without an ATAR. Each university provides equivalent ATAR scores to enable students to enter university courses. At St Luke’s, students are able to obtain the Diploma and an ATAR through the HSC and thus choose which option to use to enter university. In addition, students completing the full diploma with Kaplan through St Lukes are able to gain credit towards a Bachelor degree at Kaplan Business school, and complete a Bachelor degree in 2 years, not 3.

Students are also able to do school based traineeships and internships while continuing their HSC studies at St Luke’s. A number of students in year 11 are completing this option. One student, who is completing a traineeship in early childhood, will graduate St Luke’s with a HSC, a Certificate in Early Childhood and a Certificate in Hospitality, while only studying three subjects at school, enabling her to spend a day a week with on the job training at our Early Learning Centre. Additional students are doing traineeships in retail, with some students doing VET based TAFE Courses in Accounting, Business Services, Allied Health and Information Technology.

Many students in year 11 are engaging in external courses through St Luke’s, where there are small cohorts within the school wanting to do those courses. Currently, we have a student in year 11 completing a TAFE course in Allied Health, and 6 students engaging in different languages - Korean, French and Japanese through School of Languages. There are many courses available to students where they can complete studies externally through other schools or TAFE in order to work towards their career goals. Some examples of these are fashion design, baking, beauty services and community services.

Current research on careers shows that our young people will have up to 17 jobs and 5 career changes within their lifestyle. 65% of students in the lower years of high school will be employed in jobs that don’t yet exist. Focussing on a single career pathway then, is not in our student’s best interests. Instead, students should be focussing on what they are interested in and successful at - and looking at clusters of careers where the skillset for each career within the cluster aligns. These career clusters have been examined to group similar skillsets for careers together. For example, caring careers like teaching and nursing have similar skillsets and mindsets and people that are good at one will generally be good at the other. This opens up more options for students who can understand the career cluster and bring an understanding of their skills and capabilities to selecting their future subject choices to optimise their success in their future.

For our parents of year 10 students, please continue to have open conversations with your children about their preferences.  More information regarding the subject selection advice and selection process will be delivered via a Zoom Parent Information Event in Week 8.  Appointments will then be made available for parents to then meet individually with senior leadership in Week 2 of Term 3.

Year 10 English

Students in Year 10 English are currently studying Powerful Speeches. There is power to words, whether written or spoken. A single speech has the capacity to change, shape and redefine the world we live in. There is no better way to capture your arguments, develop themes, portray a story, convict a criminal, defend the innocent, highlight a cause or bring awareness to an issue.

Everyday speeches are used to guide and inform, persuade and entertain. There is no doubt, speeches change people’s lives. In this unit of work, students will explore a range of famous speeches that convey powerful ideas, perspectives and have shaped our contemporary existence. They will develop an appreciation for the textual integrity and value of these speeches in modern society. Students examine, analyse, question and articulate the ways voice can be shaped by language forms and features, authority and power. In addition, students will explore poetry as a mode to express one's distinctive voice and will have the opportunity to experiment with language forms and features to creatively express their own voice.

This unit seeks to inspire students to create their own powerful pieces of rhetoric and poetic compositions. By the end of this unit, students will be able to evaluate how a composer’s voice can be made memorable.

Congratulations

Salote Wolfgramm from year 9 competed in National athletics, discus and hammer, at the end of Term 1. Salote competed in the U15’s and U17’s National Discus and came 4th in both of these events. She then also competed in the National U15’s and U17’s Hammer where she came 5th and 9th respectively. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is off to a flying start at St Luke’s. This is the first year the Award is running and has been offered as a Year 9 elective. There are currently 23 students registered in the first level - Bronze. The students are required to log hours of voluntary service, physical recreation and skill, as well as complete two overnight camps as a group. The students are excitedly preparing for their first overnight camp at the end of May. Take a look at what the group has been up to so far -

Keep up the inspiring work! Mrs Antoinette Roach

Good Friday night Walk

On April 15, we had several of our students participate in the Good Friday Night Walk. This 20km walk begins at Mary, Queen of the Family Parish, Blacktown & concludes at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta. A great effort and opportunity for prayer and reflection during Holy Week.

Is an Apprenticeship or a Traineeship something you would be interested in?

An apprenticeship or traineeship is one of the best ways to get hands-on training and a nationally recognised qualification while being paid. They’re more than a foot in the door to gain experience - they’re a great way to start your career as they give you the skills employers need. You can even begin your apprenticeship or traineeship while you’re at school. And many of them are fee-free!

Apprenticeships

As an apprentice, you’ll spend three to four years learning a traditional trade such as building and construction, automotive, cooking, engineering, hairdressing or manufacturing. You’ll graduate as a qualified tradesperson.

Traineeships

As a trainee, you’ll spend one to three years, depending on your industry and qualification, learning a vocation in areas such as agriculture, information technology, hospitality, business, digital media or financial services. This website can help you look at the training requirements for apprenticeships and traineeships.

Study Skills Website

The school subscribes to the following website for students - This is a website that helps students develop essential skills for academic success. There are units of work on topics such as improving time management skills, how to study, research skills, summarising, technology use, brain and memory.

Lifelong Learners Bulletin

Students receive a fortnightly bulletin that lists opportunities for pathways for students - work, university and traineeships that are available. This is distributed via the HSC and ROSA course on canvas which each student is enrolled in. An example of this is here.
