Culture Studies / Visual Arts

Over the past two weeks students have been exploring the Japanese Culture. They have been introduced to this culture through the exploration on origami and fashion.

Students in all levels have been involved in making some origami designs and a school wide challenge has been created to make 300 or more butterflies for a school design. The Butterflies represent metamorphosis and transformation as they change from a caterpillar into butterflies. Students in every year level have been loving this challenge and have been making extra butterflies during recess, lunch and at home. I am very proud of their efforts.

Students have also been exploring tradition dress by making, colouring in and dressing a traditional Japanese Kokeshi doll. Every student has thoroughly enjoyed their activities and have loved making and decorating their own dolls.

PE and Health

Since swimming has finished students in PE, students in foundation have started a unit on The Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) is a movement-based program which helps younger students improve their eye/hand and eye/foot coordination, fitness, balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills. With parent help students are developing some important whole body movement and skills for learning.

In years 1 – 6 students have been introduced to Gymnastics. It was highlighted that gymnastics develops an awareness and understand of how the body moves and how to safely support ourselves in movement, through balance, flexibility, strength and falls. All students are thoroughly enjoying this unit.

In Health, students in all year levels have been working on Problem Solving strategies. They have been doing role plays and exploring what different problems they might have at school and at home and then working through different ways to solve these problems and the best way to solve these problems. Hopefully you are seeing some of these good choices at home.

Interschool Sports

Last week our Netball girls team played Heatherton Christian College (HCC), while the AFL team had a bye. Most of the girls are just starting to play the game for the first time, so it’s about learning new skills and rules of the game. It was a very interesting game and the girls did extremely well. We had a good win 8-2, which Lucy scoring 4 points and a number of other girls scoring 1 each. The AFL team is made up of both Le Page students and HCC, so they had a training session together.

This week both the AFL team and the Netball team were playing against OLA. It was a tough day in regards to the scores as both teams were comprehensively defeated, however both teams tried their absolute best, had fun and continue to improve with their skills. They also showed great team work and respect for both themselves and the other team.

Well done.
