Spectacular 5/6
Grade 5/6
Term 2 Week 4 2022 - Friday 20th of May 2022
Message from the Teacher:
We are off and running with Term 2 and everyone has done a good job of getting back into the swing of things. Without the tiring distraction of swimming, we have dived right into our story writing, authors study and addition and subtraction work. We have also resumed our visits to the kindergarten next door, interschool sport and our school leadership responsibilities. Busy times!
A huge focus for our class over the start of this term has been displaying the traits and behaviour of the school’s leaders. We have discussed how our behaviour and actions as the ‘Big Kids’ of the school impacts the behaviour of the smaller students around us. We have discussed how taking responsibility for our actions and understanding what a role model means is crucial for whole school behaviour in the playground and in the classroom. An amazing example of the kind and caring nature of my class was shown on our recent trips to North Cheltenham Preschool, where I was so immensely proud of the student’s behaviour. They showed great compassion, empathy and patience with the little kids and the smiles on their faces showed that they were having just as much fun! I would appreciate it if you would talk to your child about their experiences there, to give them a chance to express their feelings and thoughts about working with the little kids.
Learning Intentions for Term 2:
Reading: Book Club has continued again this week and will continue running through term 2. Each week will have a specific focus; characters, setting, etc and I have encourage each student to have a conversation with a family member each week before their book club session.
Writing: This term has a focus on story writing, with a focus on character description, creative and appropriate language and story structure.
Maths: In Maths we are continuing through our unit on addition and subtraction and will approach this topic in a variety of different ways to ensure understanding by everybody in the class. We will be focusing on the addition and subtraction of decimals in the coming weeks.
Inquiry: We will begin our exploration of mankind’s footprint on this planet and how it affects plants, animals and the weather. We have our big term excursion to the Melbourne Zoo on the 1st of June, a culmination of the first part of our unit.
