Years 3-6

Term 2, Week 6

Cows Create Careers

This week was Week 4 of the Cows Create Careers program. On Monday, we were joined by John Hutchison via WebEx. Dairy Australia’s Cows Create Careers project is nationally co-ordinated by John and he was apart of a small team who developed the program and curriculum in 2004 for South Gippsland. It was such a privilege to have John meet with the 3-6 students and discuss farming and the dairy industry.

John spoke to us about many things such as the difference between Jersey and Holstein cows in terms of milk production, the milk production process as well as the water and fat percentages in milk. We got to ask many questions to John and he gave us very thoughtful and insightful answers. John thought Ctayah's question "Would breeding Jersey and Holstein together result in better milk production?" was one of the most interesting questions he has ever been asked!

On Wednesday we explored the topic of farm safety. We discussed a wide range of topics including: quad bikes, motorbikes and helmets, children on farm, animals, machinery, noise, chemical, dams and water safety. The students have all been working so hard on their projects and should be very proud of their work. Well done Year 3-6 students.

Information Reports

We have started learning about Information Reports in writing. We chose an Australian animal and researched their habitat, diet, appearance and interesting facts. We made posters to share this information.
