We are pleased to announce that the following Year 7 students have been selected to participate in the Victorian High Ability Program. Meg A, Zebe H, Hazel K, Elyan P, Rommy P, Willow R, Greta S and Rupert W will be engaging in an extension Maths and English curriculum.

They will participate in weekly online lessons with like-minded students to further and extend their skills and abilities. Our VHAP students continue to demonstrate our Strive value by challenging themselves in tasks, seeking feedback, and continuously demonstrating a growth mindset. We look forward to seeing the work they produce through the VHAP program!

Year 8 Indonesian

This term in Indonesian the year 8 students are learning about different kinds of foods and their tastes. The students have been very engaged in this topic and are looking forward to their taste-testing in class throughout weeks 3 and 4. Some students have even been taking home recipes to create themselves and share with their family members, with outstanding results.

Melody, from 8A made a traditional Nasi Goreng (fried rice) as she describes, “I made fried rice using: rice, eggs, bacon, carrots, string beans, and frozen veggies. It was a beautiful dish that my family enjoyed and something that I will make more of”

Year 9 Environmental Studies

Year 9 Environmental Studies had a great excursion Wednesday 11th May to Spring Creek.  We learnt about the native species in the area and the conservation efforts to reintroduce the at risk Moonah Trees to the area.  Students were commended by the instructor Hilary on their attitude, effort and behaviour on the day – most impressed with how they got straight into the activity of pulling out the protective stakes around the juvenile trees.

“ They all did an amazing job and should be congratulated on their attitude, effort and behaviour. Thanks. The conservation team were very impressed this morning when they came to pick up all the tree stakes!” - Hilary Bouma Education Leader | Coast Guardians Program Coordinator

Year 9 Torquay Community House

Some of our Year 9 students attended the new Story Time Program at Torquay  Community House.  Year 9 students facilitate the Story Time at TCH Tuesday 9:15-10am.

Storytime helps children  develop early literacy skills and a lifelong love of books, utilising  stories, songs and rhymes. A take-home craft activity will be available.  Sessions will run for 45 minutes.

Year 10 Outdoor & Environmental Studies

Students in Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Studies have been busy undertaking a range of excursions this term to learn about their local environment. They have been snorkelling and mountain biking in Anglesea, Orienteering at the You Yangs, exploring Torquay’s local history and rock climbing in Geelong.

Senior Boys Football

On Thursday 12 May the Senior Boys footy team went out to play in the regional round robin event.  There was a mixed group of boys from both year 11 and 12, some with football experience other minimal however wanting to play a game of footy with their school mates.

First game was against the Western Heights football academy team, which Surf Coast won by 3 goals.  The team work, skill and fitness the boys showed in this game was very impressive to watch, following instructions to stop their player for the team before attacking the ball and being offensive showed the unity of the term and resulted in a fantastic win.

Game 2 was against Northern Bay SC which the boys again played very well as a team and won easily by 6 goals. A great even contribution by all players, with the team being swapped around from forwards to backs in the second half and all accepting the challenge.

Semi Final was game 3 against Belmont, a close game with SCSC winning by 4 point in a great battle.

In to the Final against Grovedale after 3 back to back games, the team was tired however up for the challenge to win the day!  Another magnificent effort by every single player, playing for their mates, supporting and encouraging however unable to clinch the win going down by 3 goals in the end.

The Senior boys should be very proud of their efforts on the day, their sportsmanship, teamwork, respect shown to all involved was exceptional and they represented Surf Coast Secondary College in the highest level demonstrating our school values successfully.

Introducing our new Speech Pathologist

~ Dianne Kuriger

Dianne Kuriger
Dianne Kuriger

"I am very excited to be at Surf Coast Secondary College in a newly created role as Speech Pathologist. At present my position involves supporting the Disability Inclusion rollout that is being trialled in this region by working alongside other staff and using my skills to add to our understanding of each students’ unique needs and profile."

"Prior to coming here, I have had an extensive work history both in New Zealand and Australia in working with students with a range of communication difficulties. Although sometimes people think that Speech Pathologists help with speech matters, we really are interested in the wider picture of helping students understand instructions, and interpret and use language for learning, and communicating with others.

I am especially interested in assisting students with social communication skills to support friendships and community connection as well as prepare them for communicating with a range of people post school.

Prior to coming to Surf Coast College, I worked at the Social Learning Studio, and at Gateways Family Support as well as other positions in Education and in private practise.  I am looking forward to working alongside teachers and other staff at Surf Coast Secondary College to support students on their pathway in secondary school."

We very much welcome Dianne to the SCSC team!

School Council

This issue, we have been chatting with our School Council President Chris Zois.  Chris has been a long-time supporter of SCSC and our values and is also a loving husband, parent, business owner, basketball coach and valued member of our community;

When did you join the School Council?
Chris Zois
Chris Zois
"1st day the school was opened over at Torquay College."

Why did you want to be part of the School Council?

"To help grow and guide the school from another prospective/viewpoint. As you would know by now, I’m not your “usual” school council member, so I wanted to make sure that your not so average student got a fair go as well."

What has been the highlight of your time being part of the school council?
"I have seen it all and am always amazed and proud of how far we have come. Seeing the school grow from the initial 30-40 students over at the primary school to moving into our own stand-alone school with state of the art facilities, to growing to almost 1000 students. Even when a lot of locals had expressed their doubts about the success of the school from the beginning, there was never any doubt in our minds that with the past and present leaders of our school, it was never a matter of if the school is a success but when."
