On Tuesday the 17th of May the Year 12 Geography students went to Burwood Brickworks to investigate the impacts of Land Use Change here.
The students sketched, observed the rooftop garden, and even had a guest speaker (Developer) talk to them about how the centre ensured that Brickworks has a 6 Star Eco rating - making it the most sustainable shopping centre in the world!
Well done everyone :) Ms Allison
On Friday the 13th of May, a few of the Year 8 classes went on a Geography Fieldwork excursion to the Dandenong Ranges, as part of the Landscapes and Landforms unit.
Despite the rain, we still had a very fun and educational experience. Julia, a ranger for Parks Victoria, helped guide us through Grants Picnic Ground and Burkes Lookout, giving us a better understanding on abiotic and biotic factors of rainforests, damp forests, and dry forest environments.
One of the best parts of this excursion was getting to look at and learn more about the beautiful flora and fauna up in the mountains! One of the trees we got to see and learn about that day, was called a ‘mountain ash’, this tree is the worlds tallest flowering tree, as well as the second tallest tree in the world!
Another highlight was Burkes Lookout, which had an incredible view of Melbourne from the top of Mount Dandenong! We also learnt about ‘under-storey’ ‘mid-storey’ and ‘over-storey’ which is basically used to identify the canopy level of where something is situated. Another thing I learnt on this trip was about canopy coverage, the amount of canopy coverage in an area can be determined by the amount of sky that is blocked by the leaves, on the over-story of trees in the forest.
It was such an amazing experience, and I learnt a lot! I am very grateful that we were given the opportunity to go on this trip, and for all of the effort made by the teachers at VSC, that made this trip possible. From Natalie G of 8M1
Thank you to Ms Bowen, Mr Duiveman, Mr Pinder, Mr Henderson, Mr Mizzi and all the office staff who helped organise the day :)
