Melbourne Graduate School of Education Careers in Teaching Expo

St. Peter's College had the privilege of being represented at the prestigious Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) Careers in Teaching Expo on Friday, 28th July 2023. Mr. David Hansen, the Deputy Principal Learning & Teaching, and Ms. Jade Smith, the Learning & Teaching Pedagogical Coach, enthusiastically attended the event to engage with pre-graduate teachers and extend an invitation to explore a rewarding career at St. Peter's College.

The annual Careers in Teaching Expo is a significant event, offering teacher candidates the opportunity to connect with industry experts, State Government recruiters, and schools from across Australia. For St. Peter's College, it presented an ideal platform to showcase the unique features of the school's teaching and learning environment.

Mr. Hansen and Ms. Smith warmly interacted with aspiring educators, providing them a glimpse into the vibrant teaching community at St. Peter's College. They emphasized the school's core values, such as a student-centred approach to education and the importance of creating a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere for both students and educators.

Throughout the Expo, attendees benefited from valuable sessions, including talks by Principals who shared insights on crafting outstanding applications. Pre-graduate teachers had the chance to observe sample interviews, participate in mock interviews, and receive constructive feedback from a panel of Principals and current teachers. Our representatives were committed to guiding and supporting these aspiring educators, reiterating the school's dedication to excellence in education.

One of the highlights of the Expo was the opportunity to share information with first-year students about the exclusive Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship program for 2024. This program is specially designed to nurture exceptional teaching talent within the St. Peter's College community.

This experience was incredibly rewarding, as both Mr Hansen and Ms Smith had the chance to inspire and encourage pre-graduate teachers to consider joining the esteemed community of passionate educators at St. Peter's College.

As St. Peter's College looks towards the future, the school eagerly anticipates welcoming new talent—individuals who share the school's passion for education and are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of students.

Term 3 - Exceptional Learners.

This term has seen a flurry of activity for some of the exceptional learners at St Peter's College.

Thriving Minds Reflection from Mr Patrick Barton

A small cohort was selected to represent our School at this year's "Thriving Minds" event at Scotch College. Here, students explored the philosophy of decision making, and the various schools of thought that have attempted to determine how we ought to act and respond within a civilised society. Do we look to role models? Should we compare ourselves to others? Are decisions best made on extrinsic, or intrinsic factors?

These philosophical models were then applied to a house debate on the assertion that "It is never okay to Lie", hosted by Julie Arliss and Oxford University's Dr Andrew Pinsent.

SIS Debating Reflection from Mr Patrick Barton

The 2023 Season of debating started off at Flinders College on Thursday, July 27th.

However, before we made it to the first round, a good deal of work had to be done in regard to team selections.

Such was the quality of applicants this year, a qualifying round had to be undertaken in the Geode Centre at the Clyde North Campus.

This was a great bonding experience for students of both campuses, as well as an opportunity to practice some debating tactics ahead of the official season.

On the day of the first round, the Cranbourne Students faced off against a numbers of schools from across the southern districts, on matters including:

That universities should be legally required to secure jobs for all their graduates.

- That schools should not give awards based on performance, but based on effort.

- That it should be compulsory to obtain a license to own a pet.

Our students did our school proud, taking away some victories, some nominations for best speaker, and a fair amount of sweat from the opposition's brow.

The St. Peter’s teams  had a mixture of ‘seasoned’ and ‘first-time’ debaters and all added their special skills to their debating topics.

All the teams did exceptionally well in their debates with the seniors capping off a rigorous debating day with a win against their Clyde North teammates by one point.

Although not all debates were won, all debates were down to the narrowest of margins.

It was a privilege to support these fine young minds; their enthusiasm and dedication to their teams and the professional manner in which they presented their arguments was a pleasure to watch.

The debriefing with each other on the journey home ensures our debating team is serious and ready for Round 2!
