Child Safety

Child Safe Standard 6 (Ministerial Order No. 1359 clause 10) positions child safety and wellbeing as a primary consideration in all decisions regarding recruitment of staff and engagement of volunteers. As part of this standard, schools are required to develop and implement policies and procedures for recruitment processes, as well as supervision, specific training and performance management of staff and volunteers to reduce the risk of child abuse. Staff and volunteers need to be supervised to ensure they are behaving in a way that is prioritising the safety of children, and so that they can receive feedback to improve.

Child Safe Standard 8 provides more information about child safe training and support for staff and volunteers. Once staff or volunteers have started working with children or young people, schools need to support them to understand their responsibilities through the induction process, ongoing education and training, and professional development.
