Year 11 Visual Arts Bundanon Residency
The Year 11 Visual Arts cohort, alongside Visual Arts teachers Mr. Phillipson, Ms. Boundy and Mr. Fela, undertook an artist residency at the Visual Arts Centre: Bundanon, located in Illaroo on the South Coast of NSW from 30 July to 1 August.
Bundanon Trust was established in 1999, with the intention to promote and educate the arts and artmaking practice to visitors. The centre was previously owned by renowned Australian artist, Arthur Boyd, most well-known for his large-scale oil paintings interpreting the Australian landscape. This residency extended upon the major themes explored in our current unit Land as Art as Bundanon highlights the importance of the landscape as muse and medium in artmaking. We were exposed to and heavily influenced by Arthur Boyd whose practice was intended to transmit an emotional depiction of the landscape, rather than to replicate the environment.
This residency allowed us to gain a deeper understanding in the relationship that exists between artist, artwork, audience and world. Throughout this time, we immersed ourselves in a range of artmaking workshops, such as Eco Dying, Acrylic Painting en plein air (in the open air), Charcoal Drawing and Ink Staining. Through this time, we developed a deeper relationship between ourselves and the land that has long been a source of inspiration for artists. The residency offered us the unique opportunity to remove themselves from the four walls of the classroom and allowed us to truly consider nature as a source of inspiration, material resource and subject matter.
A massive thank you to all the teachers attending, with special mention to Mr Phillipson who organised the excursion and spent his time providing continuous inspirational messages which pushed our artmaking.
