Lunchtime Activities

Super effort from our Chess Club team

On 19 October, nine students from Koonung (ranging from Year 8 to Year 11) attended the state chess finals at Huntingtower School. We entered two teams, one in the middle years division consisting of Tehmi Harding, Elliot Field, James Nicholson and Ashton Lonnen, and one in the open secondary division, with Henry Jackson, James Lonnen, Dhruv Mehta, Ronak Sen and I.

We played nine games throughout the day, each taking around half an hour. Koonung was a notable representation, as the only public school and one of the smaller teams there on the day.

The middle years team came seventh in the state while the open team came third. Our notable individual achievements were a top ten finish in the state for James Lonnen and third overall for me.

It was a fantastic effort from everyone involved, and a massive thank you to Ms Prosenak for helping organise everything with only two days' notice.

Anyone who’s interested in chess should come down to the chess club on Friday lunchtimes, and hopefully we’ll be heading to the national finals in the next few weeks.
