Australian Geography competition
Geography students from Koonung Secondary College tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2022 Australian Geography Competition in early April.
We have a number of student geographers at our school who performed very well in the competition this year with Kian Shafaie in the top 1% in their year level across Australia. Well done Kian! Congratulations to all of our participants; of the 45 students that competed, 2 gained high distinctions, 8 gained distinctions and 12 gained credits.
Nearly 70,000 students from across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition. The results give us an external benchmark as to how our students are going in certain aspects of geography.
For the first time this year, competition organisers were able to provide cognitive process results. You can see from the table below how proficient Koonung students were when compared to their peers across the country.
Rachel Honey, the Competition’s national coordinator, said “The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. Geography is such an important subject because it brings together the physical and human dimensions of our environment, helping students to develop a deeper understanding of our world and the challenges it faces."
The Competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland.
