“We are called to assist the earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own - indeed to embrace the whole creation in all its diversity, beauty and wonder.”
Morris students began Meeting House Gatherings in Term 3, reflecting on these words from inspirational environmental activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai. Throughout the Term we considered our responsibility to care for the earth and our deep connection to all living things and reflected on stories of everyday people, often young people, taking action to heal the earth. We also examined the concept of being caretakers of the earth and the indigenous perspective of being owned by or part of the land rather than being owners of the land.
Year 6 students were able to make connections to their Exhibition work and the personal action each of them were taking in response to their inquiries. Year 4 students were able to make links to their classroom learning about marine environments and the dangers of pollution to ocean creatures. Kindergarten students connected with their weekly Earthcare excursions and the need to “leave only footprints and take only memories” when they visit natural places. In the Starlight and Waratah Rooms in Friends' Early Learning, children and staff shared their personal action to help the earth - composting at home, recycling soft plastics in the classroom, bringing “nude lunches” and saving water. Students in all year groups reflected thoughtfully on the gifts we receive every day from the earth and small actions they can take to look after our world for future generations.
The Quaker Values Committee (QVC) visit in Term 2 allowed us to share more about our Gatherings with the wider Australian Quaker community. Visiting committee members were able to experience a Kindergarten, Year 5 and Clemes Gathering. The Quaker Advisors are committed to communicating more about our Gathering program with the QVC in hopes of fostering a strong connection and reciprocal relationship where resources and ideas can be shared.
